We assessed the effects of a non-invasive neuromodulatory intervention with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the motor cortex in patients with vegetative state (VS) by a randomised, sham-controlled study with a cross-over design. Eleven patients classified as being in VS (9 post-anoxic, 2 post-traumatic, time elapsed from the injury 9-85 months) were included in the study. Real or sham 20 Hz rTMS were applied to the left primary motor cortex (M1) for 5 consecutive days.

Differential diagnoses between vegetative and minimally conscious states (VS and MCS, respectively) are frequently incorrect. Hence, further research is necessary to improve the diagnostic accuracy at the bedside. The main neuropathological feature of VS is the diffuse damage of cortical and subcortical connections.

Objective: Recently it has been shown that the adult sleep EEG is mostly determined by high-dimensional, linear dynamics with the exception of the A phase of the cyclic alternating pattern which displays more synchronized nonlinear dynamics. It is not known how these two different types of brain dynamics develop in early life; for this reason the aim of this study was that to extend the nonlinear analysis to the EEG during sleep recorded in premature and full-term newborns.

Methods: EEG epochs were chosen from a total of 24 polygraphic recordings from 14 babies (9 males and 5 females) aged between 33 weeks 3 days and 4 months conceptional age.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of disruption on the warning auditory S1-elicited ERP and CNV complexes recordable on the site and on remote ipsilateral apparently normal anatomo-functionally interconnected brain regions. These effects in some cases showed aspects of a probable diaschisis-like phenomenon, due to resections of extensive frontal association cortex or of primary and secondary sensory parieto-temporal areas damaged by differing pathological processes. Using a standard CNV paradigm, 21/19 EEG electrodes connected with three different references, and scalp-topographic bidimensional mapping analysis, the S1 auditory binaural/monaural clicks N1a,b,c, P2, N2, P3 and CNV waves were recorded in 10 normal subjects and 11 patients.
