Longitudinal micro-incision creation prior to balloon angioplasty for treatment of arteriovenous access dysfunction in a real-world patient population: 6-month cohort analysis.

Introduction: Routine hemodialysis depends on well-functioning vascular access. In the event of vascular access dysfunction, percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty (PTA) is conducted to restore patency. Although an angioplasty procedure can provide an excellent immediate result by opening the access to allow dialysis to continue, the long-term patency rates are less than satisfactory.

Ruptured aneurysm of the inferior thyroid artery: repair with coil embolization.

Although pseudoaneurysm of the thyrocervical trunk is seen with increasing frequency as a result of trauma or central venous cannulation, true aneurysm of the thyrocervical trunk is exceedingly rare. A 44-year-old woman presented with acute left neck swelling that progressed rapidly to respiratory distress and subsequent hemothorax. Emergency endotracheal intubation was performed for airway control, and tube thoracostomy was placed for drainage of the pleural space.

Thigh compartment syndrome: diagnosis and surgical treatment.

Thigh compartment syndrome is uncommon and may go unrecognized. Signs and symptoms include a history of thigh swelling and/or hematoma and pain after minor injury in a patient who is anticoagulated. Surgical approaches to the deep thigh compartments are described.

Analysis of the incidence of pelvic trauma in fatal automobile accidents.

Pelvic fractures are frequent complications of motor vehicle accidents, and motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of pelvic fracture. Although pelvic fractures are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, there has traditionally been no attempt to grade or classify pelvic fractures during postmortem examination. The authors performed a retrospective study of cases examined at the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office from 1994 to 1996, reviewing investigative reports and autopsy findings.
