Comparison between investigations of induced stepping postural responses and voluntary steps to better detect community-dwelling elderly fallers.

In this paper, we review a physiological task that is predominant in preventing humans from falling, but that simultaneously also challenges balance: taking a step. In particular, two variants of this task are presented and compared: the voluntary step versus a step induced by an external and unpredictable perturbation. We show that, while these contribute different information, it is interesting to compare these.

Anatomic and angiographic findings of cerebellar arteriovenous malformations: Report of a single center experience.

Cerebellar arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are rare and comprise only 5-10% of cerebral AVM. The concentration of eloquent neurological systems and the high rate of bleeding presentation of AVMs particularly in this location complicate the management of such lesions. New therapeutic options, especially in endovascular neurosurgery, have fundamentally modified the strategy and, also, the outcome of cerebellar AVMs.

Endovascular treatment of cribriform plate dural arteriovenous fistulas: technical difficulties and complications avoidance.

Objective: Cribriform plate dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) is a rare pathology, for which the treatment of choice used to be neurosurgery. Technological advances in micro-catheters and embolic agents permitted new endovascular alternatives.

Methods: We included all patients treated endovascularly for a cribriform plate dAVF between 2008 and 2013.

Trigeminal neuralgia due to arterialization of the superior petrosal vein in the context of dural or cerebral arteriovenous shunt.

Objective: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a rare revealing symptom of dural or cerebral arteriovenous (AV) shunt. Few isolated cases have described the association between TN and arteriovenous shunt. We presented our experience concerning cerebral AV shunt revealed by a TN.

Call for uniform neuropsychological assessment after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: Swiss recommendations.

Background: In a high proportion of patients with favorable outcome after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), neuropsychological deficits, depression, anxiety, and fatigue are responsible for the inability to return to their regular premorbid life and pursue their professional careers. These problems often remain unrecognized, as no recommendations concerning a standardized comprehensive assessment have yet found entry into clinical routines.

Methods: To establish a nationwide standard concerning a comprehensive assessment after aSAH, representatives of all neuropsychological and neurosurgical departments of those eight Swiss centers treating acute aSAH have agreed on a common protocol.

Three-Dimensional Rotations of the Scapula During Arm Abduction: Evaluation of the Acromion Marker Cluster Method in Comparison With a Model-Based Approach Using Biplanar Radiograph Images.

Noninvasive methods enabling measurement of shoulder bone positions are paramount in clinical and ergonomics applications. In this study, the acromion marker cluster (AMC) method is assessed in comparison with a model-based approach allowing scapula tracking from low-dose biplanar radiograph images. Six healthy male subjects participated in this study.

Recurrent IgA nephropathy is predicted by altered glycosylated IgA, autoantibodies and soluble CD89 complexes.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide, frequently leads to end-stage renal disease and kidney transplantation. However, disease recurrence often occurs after transplantation. Here we evaluated the predictive value of three markers for IgAN recurrence: the presence of galactose-deficient IgA1, IgG anti-IgA autoantibodies, and IgA-soluble (s) CD89 complexes.

Immunoassay in healthcare testing applications.

Immunoassay is used extensively for drug testing in pain management. Drug testing for the purpose of compliance monitoring is fundamentally different from forensic applications, which may rely on immunoassay screening to rapidly identify "negative" samples. In clinical settings, focus is shifted from identification of select drugs of abuse with low positivity rates to detection of a wide variety of licit and illicit compounds with expected high positivity rates.

Inference of domestication history and differentiation between early- and late-flowering varieties in pearl millet.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a staple crop in Sahelian Africa. Farmers usually grow varieties with different cycle lengths and complementary functions in Sahelian agrosystems. Both the level of genetic differentiation of these varieties and the domestication history of pearl millet have been poorly studied.

Tampering with cell division by using small-molecule inhibitors of CDK-CKS protein interactions.

Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) control many cellular processes and are considered important therapeutic targets. Large collections of inhibitors targeting CDK active sites have been discovered, but their use in chemical biology or drug development has been often hampered by their general lack of specificity. An alternative approach to develop more specific inhibitors is targeting protein interactions involving CDKs.

Multimodal angiographic assessment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations: a pilot study.

Purpose: We describe our protocol of three-dimensional (3D) Roadmap intracranial navigation and image fusion for analysis of the angioarchitecture and endovascular treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).

Methods: We performed superselective catheterization of brain AVMs feeders under 3D-Roadmap navigation. Angiograms of each catheterized artery on two registered orthogonal views were transferred to the imaging workstations, and dedicated postprocessing imaging software allowed automated multiple overlays of the arterial supply of the AVM superselective acquisitions on the global angiogram in angiographic or 3D views and on coregistered MRI datasets.

Angiographic factors influencing the success of endovascular treatment of arteriovenous malformations involving the corpus callosum.

Objective: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the corpus callosum are rare lesions, accounting for 9-11% of brain AVMs. Microsurgical resection of such lesions is difficult because of their deep location, and also because of possible neuropsychological disasters resulting from extended callosal resection. The introduction of endovascular and radiation therapies has fundamentally changed the outcome of these lesions.

Prevalence of heroin markers in urine for pain management patients.

Surveys of current trends indicate heroin abuse is associated with nonmedical use of pain relievers. Consequently, there is an interest in evaluating the presence of heroin-specific markers in chronic pain patients who are prescribed controlled substances. A total of 926,084 urine specimens from chronic pain patients were tested for heroin/diacetylmorphine (DAM), 6-acetylmorphine (6AM), 6-acetylcodeine (6AC), codeine (COD), and morphine (MOR).

Solitary fibrous tumour with intramedullary component: case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare WHO grade I mesenchymal neoplasms that were first described in the visceral pleura. A wide variety of locations of SFT have been reported but only twelve cases of intramedullary solitary fibrous tumour. We report a case of thoracic spinal cord SFT.

A 3D analysis of the joint torques developed during driver's ingress-egress motion.

Unlabelled: Providing an easy ingress-egress (I/E) movement remains a challenge for car designers. I/E has been largely studied in kinematics, but not in dynamics. This study proposes: (1) to evaluate and describe the motor torques developed in the lower limbs and lumbar joints during I/E motions and (2) to analyse the influence of the car geometry and subject anthropometry.

[Which definition and taxonomy of incident to use for a French reporting system in primary care settings?].

Background: There is no widely accepted definition of incident for primary care doctors in France and no taxonomic classification system for epidemiological use. In preparation for a future epidemiological study on primary care incidents in France (the ESPRIT study), this work was designed to identify the definitions and taxonomic classifications used internationally along with the usual methods and results in terms of frequency in the literature. The goal was to determine a French definition and taxonomy.

Observations on pedestrian pre-crash reactions during simulated accidents.

Pedestrian protection systems, both active and passive systems, are being introduced in the EU and Japan to comply with regulatory requirements. Their designs are specific and, in general, reflect an accident scenario of the pedestrian being struck on the side by a vehicle traveling at a maximum travel speed of 40 kph. The present study is an effort to quantify the effects of pedestrian reaction prior to an accident and identify characteristics that may help minimize or prevent the pedestrian to vehicle interaction.

Cancer-related genes in the transcription signature of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy myoblasts and myotubes.

Muscular dystrophy is a condition potentially predisposing for cancer; however, currently, only Myotonic dystrophy patients are known to have a higher risk of cancer. Here, we have searched for a link between facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) and cancer by comparing published transcriptome signatures of FSHD and various malignant tumours and have found a significant enrichment of cancer-related genes among the genes differentially expressed in FSHD. The analysis has shown that gene expression profiles of FSHD myoblasts and myotubes resemble that of Ewing's sarcoma more than that of other cancer types tested.

Differentiation between stoichiometric and anticatalytic antioxidant properties of benzoic acid analogues: a structure/redox potential relationship study.

We investigated the antioxidant activities of some phenolic acid derivatives on a cell free system and on cellular and enzymatic models involved in inflammation. The stoichiometric antioxidant activities of phenolic acid derivatives were studied by measuring their capacity to scavenge the radical cation 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS(+)) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by stimulated neutrophils. The anticatalytic antioxidant capacity of the molecules was evaluated on the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), an oxidant enzyme present in and released by the primary granules of neutrophils.

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome identification of prognostic factors.

Object: Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is described as a clinical and radiological entity characterized by thunderclap headaches, a reversible segmental or multifocal vasoconstriction of cerebral arteries with or without focal neurological deficits or seizures. The purpose of this study is to determine risk factors of poor outcome in patients presented a RCVS.

Methods: A retrospective multi-center review of invasive and non-invasive neurovascular imaging between January 2006 and January 2011 has identified 10 patients with criterion of reversible segmental vasoconstriction syndrome.
