COVID-19, nationalism, and the politics of crisis: A scholarly exchange.

In this article, several scholars of nationalism discuss the potential for the COVID-19 pandemic to impact the development of nationalism and world politics. To structure the discussion, the contributors respond to three questions: (1) how should we understand the relationship between nationalism and COVID-19; (2) will COVID-19 fuel ethnic and nationalist conflict; and (3) will COVID-19 reinforce or erode the nation-state in the long run? The contributors formulated their responses to these questions near to the outset of the pandemic, amid intense uncertainty. This made it acutely difficult, if not impossible, to make predictions.

Practice patterns of Canadian glaucoma specialists: planning for the next generation.

Background: To identify practice patterns of Canadian glaucoma specialists in order to begin identifying the needs of the work force to care for the next generation of glaucoma patients.

Methods: Survey of 130 Canadian glaucoma specialists whose names were obtained from the Canadian Ophthalmological Society specialist list.

Results: The response rate was 62% (81/130); 77% (62/81) considered themselves glaucoma specialists, but only 77% (48/62) of these had at least 1 year of formal glaucoma training.

Open angle glaucoma (OAG) is a complex disorder with varying etiologies due to multiple genes and environmental effects. This genetic heterogeneity can confound efforts to map loci. Increased homogeneity in a sample can be achieved using either ordered subset analysis (OSA) which groups families, or individual OSA (IOSA), which groups individuals based on disease related covariates.

Incidence and management of encapsulated cysts following Ahmed glaucoma valve insertion.

Purpose: Encapsulated cysts have been inconsistently reported to occur following Ahmed glaucoma valve implant insertion. We are unaware of previous reports reviewing their management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and management of encapsulated cyst formation following Ahmed glaucoma valve implant insertion.

Assessing the need for posterior sclerotomy at the time of filtering surgery in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome.

Purpose: Posterior sclerotomy has been recommended for prevention of intraoperative choroidal hemorrhages and choroidal effusions in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) or Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber (KTW) syndrome undergoing glaucoma filtering surgery. In this study, we evaluated this unproven clinical perception.
