Lepidopteran heat-tolerant (ht) cell lines have been obtained with sf-9, sf-21 and several Bombyx cells. They have a distinct karyotype, membrane lipid composition, morphology and growth kinetics from the parental cell lines. In this paper, we report the development of ht cell lines from other insect species and examination of their growth characteristics and virus susceptibility.

We identified two new chitin binding proteins, named CBP1 and CBP2, from the PM of Trichoplusia ni larvae by cDNA cloning. The proteins contain 12 and 10 tandem chitin binding domains in CBP1 and CBP2, respectively.

The lack of complex glycosylation has limited the use of the insect cell baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS), despite its high productivity and versatility. The availability of cell lines capable of complex glycosylation can overcome such a problem and potentially increase the utility of BEVS.
