Objective:  Intraoperative noise exposure has been associated with an increased risk of complications, communication errors, and stress among surgical team members. This study evaluates intraoperative noise levels in cesarean deliveries during different shift times, for example, night shifts, day shifts, and hand-off times between shifts.

Study Design:  This is a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study which measured volume in decibels, percentage of time above safe levels (>60 dB), startle noise events (events with rapid increase of decibel level above baseline noise), and peak levels (>75 dB) for cesarean deliveries during a 3-month preintervention and postintervention study.

Characterizing femtoliter-volume cellular organelles requires innovative analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry, separations, and NMR. The capabilities of all three are demonstrated for characterizing the physicochemical properties of the electron-dense core atrial gland vesicles from Aplysia californica and comparing them with the same properties of the electron lucent red hemiduct vesicles. Single-vesicle mass spectrometric measurements show that the atrial gland vesicles contain an abundance of peptides while the red hemiduct vesicles contain no detectable peptide signals.

Human type 1 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/isomerase (3 beta-HSD/isomerase) catalyzes the two sequential enzyme reactions on a single protein that converts dehydroepiandrosterone or pregnenolone to androstenedione or progesterone, respectively, in placenta, mammary gland, breast tumors, prostate, prostate tumors, and other peripheral tissues. Our earlier studies show that the two enzyme reactions are linked by the coenzyme product, NADH, of the 3 beta-HSD activity. NADH activates the isomerase activity by inducing a time-dependent conformational change in the enzyme protein.
