Perioperative Outcomes following Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy and Radical Cystectomy-Is There Room for Improvement?

Introduction: We identify the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy before open radical cystectomy on perioperative outcomes and identify actionable areas for improvement.

Methods: The impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on perioperative outcomes after radical cystectomy for muscle invasive bladder cancer from 2003 to 2014 was assessed using an institutional database. Individual outcomes (venous thromboembolism, surgical site infection, cardiac event) and a composite score using the Clavien-Dindo classification were identified.

Adolescent varicocele: A large multicenter analysis of complications and recurrence in academic programs.

Objective: After varicocelectomy a wide range of recurrence rates have been reported from 0 to 18%, and rates of post-operative hydrocele formation between 0 and 29%. Controversy exists as to the appropriate approach for varicocele treatment, whether open, laparoscopic, or percutaneous embolization (PE) is best for young men. The literature on treatment of adolescent varicocele is limited to high-volume single surgeon, single institution, or small multi-institution series.

Outbreak of carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae at a long-term acute care hospital: sustained reductions in transmission through active surveillance and targeted interventions.

Objective: To describe a Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) outbreak and interventions to prevent transmission.

Design, Setting, And Patients: Epidemiologic investigation of a CRE outbreak among patients at a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH).

Methods: Microbiology records at LTACH A from March 2009 through February 2011 were reviewed to identify CRE transmission cases and cases admitted with CRE.
