The aim of the present study was to train a natural language processing model to recognize key text elements from research abstracts related to hand surgery, enhancing the efficiency of systematic review screening. A sample of 1600 abstracts from a systematic review of distal radial fracture treatment outcomes was annotated to train the natural language processing model. To assess time-saving potential, 200 abstracts were processed by the trained models in two experiments, where reviewers accessed natural language processing predictions to include or exclude articles.

Importance: Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have reported inconsistent conclusions regarding optimal distal radius fracture (DRF) treatment in older adults and are limited due to the inclusion of cohort studies with small sample sizes. A network meta-analysis (NMA) addresses these limitations by only synthesizing direct and indirect evidence from RCTs and may clarify optimal DRF treatment in older adults.

In the wake of the death toll resulting from coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), in addition to the economic turmoil and strain on our health care systems, plastic surgeons are taking a hard look at their role in crisis preparedness and how they can contribute to crisis response policies in their own health care teams. Leaders in the specialty are charged with developing new clinical policies, identifying weaknesses in crisis preparation, and ensuring survival of private practices that face untenable financial challenges. It is critical that plastic surgery builds on the lessons learned over the past tumultuous year to emerge stronger and more prepared for subsequent waves of COVID-19.

Importance: Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal fracture, but as many as 20% are not visible (ie, occult) in the initial injury radiograph; untreated scaphoid fractures can lead to degenerative wrist arthritis and debilitating pain, detrimentally affecting productivity and quality of life. Occult scaphoid fractures are among the primary causes of scaphoid nonunions, secondary to delayed diagnosis.

Importance: Owing to its tendency to recur, Dupuytren contracture often requires multiple treatments, which places additional economic burden on health care. Non-surgical treatment is successful in controlling pain and preventing disease progress in treating thumb carpometacarpal arthritis. We used Optum's de-identified Clinformatics® Data Mart Databases between 2015 and 2018 to conduct a study of the patient and provider characteristics associated with three types of non-surgical treatment (hand therapy, splinting and corticosteroid injection) prior to surgery. In this population-based cohort study, we found that non-surgical providers were more likely to provide three different types of non-surgical treatments, as compared with hand surgeons.
