gelling polymeric biomaterials have proven useful as drug delivery vehicles to enable sustained release at sites of disease or injury. However, if delivered to mucosal tissues, such as the eyes, nose, gastrointestinal, and cervicovaginal tract, these gels must also possess the ability to adhere to an epithelium coated in mucus. Towards this end, we report a new rapid gelling polyethylene glycol-based hydrogel.

In this paper, we describe the development of and early experiences with a comprehensive digital phenotyping platform: Health Outcomes through Positive Engagement and Self-Empowerment (HOPES). HOPES is based on the open-source Beiwe platform but adds a wider range of data collection, including the integration of wearable devices and further sensor collection from smartphones.

Methods: We updated a previously validated microsimulation model consisting of three interlinked components: risk assessment, natural history, and screening/treatment modules.
This project explores techniques for reducing the complexity of an agent-based model (ABM). The analysis involved a model developed from the ethnographic research of Dr. Lee Hoffer in the Larimer area heroin market, which involved drug users, drug sellers, homeless individuals and police.

This moulding process is crucial to the final aesthetic result. We present a template technique to preoperatively plan the skin envelope of each reconstruction.

A critical challenge facing cancer screening programs, particularly those aimed at uninsured people with low incomes, is choosing the screening test that makes the most efficient use of limited budgets. For colorectal cancer screening, there is growing momentum to use colonoscopy, which is an expensive test. In this study, we modeled scenarios to assess whether the use of fecal occult blood tests or colonoscopy provides the most benefit under conditions of budget constraints.

Purpose: To survey national variation in the management of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, particularly the timing of intervention and the use of nasolacrimal intubation, nasal endoscopy, and assistance from an ear, nose, and throat surgeon at different stages of management.
Methods: A telephone survey was conducted of 100 ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom who were involved in the management of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. A sequential management protocol was established for each, including the nature of procedures, their timing, and the use of nasal endoscopy and ear, nose, and throat surgeons.

This project applies agent-based modeling (ABM) techniques to better understand the operation, organization, and structure of a local heroin market. The simulation detailed was developed using data from an 18-month ethnographic case study. The original research, collected in Denver, CO during the 1990s, represents the historic account of users and dealers who operated in the Larimer area heroin market.

Background: Obtaining regular screening exams can significantly reduce colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality. Most CRC models to date have assumed "ideal conditions" such as 100% compliance, and the effects of CRC screening tests have been assessed only under these conditions. In this study, we assess cost-effectiveness incorporating real-world patient preferences and compliance.

Mathematical models that describe the global spread of infectious diseases such as influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and tuberculosis (TB) often consider a sample of international airports as a network supporting disease spread. However, there is no consensus on how many cities should be selected or on how to select those cities. Using airport flight data that commercial airlines reported to the Official Airline Guide (OAG) in 2000, we have examined the network characteristics of network samples obtained under different selection rules.

Mathematical models can be used to explore different scenarios and provide insight into potential costs, benefits, and effectiveness of prevention and control strategies under consideration.
Methods And Findings: A stochastic, equation-based epidemic model is used to study global transmission of pandemic flu, including the effects of travel restrictions and vaccination.
In the long history of the West's encounter with Hawaiian culture, which began in the late 1700s with Captain Cook, translators and translations have often been the tools of intentional falsehood, thus demonstrating the truth of the Italian proverb, Traduttore, traditore ("the translator is a traitor")--particularly with regard to same-sex texts. The standards of truth have often been subverted in translation by the demands of foreign religion, hegemony, business, and academe. This subversion continues to this day in the form of the "missionary mentality" in politics and law.

Irrigation of breast implants and breast implant pockets with various solutions, including povidone iodine, has been a common practice among plastic surgeons for many years. Recent reports of potential weakening of silicone tubing have led the Food and Drug Administration to pronounce any contact of povidone iodine with breast implants a contraindication. An in vitro experimental study was undertaken to assess the effect of povidone iodine on the physical properties of silicone breast implant shells.
