The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) exerts profound physiological effects on blood pressure regulation and fluid homeostasis, mainly by modulating renal, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. Angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7), an end-product of RAS, is recognized by its cardiovascular protective properties through stimulation of the Mas receptor, including vasodilation, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive actions, and consequently, counter-regulating the well-known Ang II-elicited actions. The overall hypothesis of this study is that Ang-(1-7) inhibits Ang II-induced ERK1/2 activation in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), via regulation of mitogen-activated protein phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) activity.

Background: We investigated the influence of salt overconsumption on the functionality of the RhoA/Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) pathway and calcium regulation in arteries.

Methods: The aorta and small mesenteric arteries from rats fed a chow containing 2%, 4%, or 8% NaCl were evaluated in organ baths for the activity of the RhoA/ROCK pathway and intracellular calcium mobilization. Components of these pathways and intracellular calcium levels were also assessed in samples from 4% NaCl group.

Introduction: A role for cytokines in the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction (ED) has emerged. Cytokines induce genes that synthesize other peptides in the cytokine family and several mediators, such as prostanoids, leukotrienes, nitric oxide, bradykinin, reactive oxygen species, and platelet-activating factor, all of which can affect vascular function. Consistent with the fact that the cavernosal tissue is a complex extension of the vasculature, risk factors that affect the vasculature have been shown to affect cavernosal function as well.

Background: The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) develops much less renal damage than the stroke-prone strain of SHR (SHRsp) after salt-supplementation, and it has been proposed that these strains differ in their genetic susceptibility to renal damage. However, radiotelemetric BP measurements have shown that salt-supplementation results in more severe and accelerated hypertension in the SHRsp. Therefore, it is unclear whether the differences in renal damage are due to differences in BP exposure or true differences in intrinsic (genetic) renal susceptibility to hypertensive damage.
