Failure to rapidly diagnose tuberculosis disease (TB) and initiate treatment is a driving factor of TB as a leading cause of death in children. Current TB diagnostic assays have poor performance in children, and identifying novel non-sputum-based TB biomarkers to improve pediatric TB diagnosis is a global priority. We sought to develop a plasma biosignature for TB by probing the plasma proteome of 511 children stratified by TB diagnostic classification and HIV status from sites in four low- and middle-income countries, using high-throughput data-independent acquisition mass-spectrometry (DIA-PASEF-MS).

Background: Computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms for automated chest X-ray (CXR) reading have been endorsed by the World Health Organization for tuberculosis (TB) triage, but independent, multi-country assessment and comparison of current products are needed to guide implementation.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue; making early, accurate, and inexpensive point-of-care detection critical for effective treatment. This paper presents a clinical demonstration of an electrochemical sensor that detects methyl-nicotinate (MN), a volatile organic biomarker associated with active pulmonary tuberculosis. The sensor was initially tested on a patient cohort comprised of 57 adults in Kampala, Uganda, of whom 42 were microbiologically confirmed TB-positive and 15 TB-negative.

Seasons can affect human inflammatory status and the occurrence of diseases, and foods may also have differential impacts on inflammation across seasons; however, few studies have investigated whether there are independent and joint impacts of seasons and red meat, fruit and vegetable intakes on inflammation in breast cancer survivors. Dry mouth is induced by dehydration of the oral mucosa, resulting from an imbalance of fluid supply and clearance within the oral cavity. Saliva is the major source of oral mucosal fluid, whereas oral fluid clearance includes evaporation and swallowing. Oral mucosal fluid absorption has been suggested to play a critical role in oral fluid clearance; over-absorption of water and ions across the oral mucosa under certain conditions may be a major component for oral fluid imbalance, leading to mucosal dehydration.

Objectives: Despite aggressive measures to miniaturize the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit in neonates and infants, the CPB prime volume is often at least as large as the patients' blood volume. We conducted an observational study to characterize the hemostatic consequences of a CPB prime consisting of either non-fresh or reconstituted whole blood.

Background: Milrinone is a phosphodiesterase III inhibitor that increases intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate resulting in improved ventricular function and vasodilation. Increased intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate also inhibit adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation. We hypothesized that inhibition of ADP and AA-induced platelet activation by therapeutic blood concentrations of milrinone could be quantified using TEG Platelet Mapping.
