Osteomyelitis (OM) is a progressive, inflammatory infection of bone caused predominately by Staphylococcus aureus. Herein, we engineered an antibiotic-eluting collagen-hydroxyapatite scaffold capable of eliminating infection and facilitating bone healing. An iterative freeze-drying and chemical crosslinking approach was leveraged to modify antibiotic release kinetics, resulting in a layered dual-release system whereby an initial rapid release of antibiotic to clear infection was followed by a sustained controlled release to prevent reoccurrence of infection.

Objective: FFA is a well-established investigation for the diagnosis of optic nerve abnormalities, requiring an intravenous cannula and extended imaging acquisition time. Cannulation can present a challenge in paediatric patients and whilst oral FFA has been used for decades, it has been limited by imaging technology and unconfirmed image acquisition timings. For years, we have used a modern ultra-widefield retinal camera, and established imaging time-points to demonstrate dynamic optic nerve head changes upon ingestion of fluorescein and collected a database of oFFA images for various presentations.

Cartilage has poor regenerative capacity and thus damage to the joint surfaces presents a major clinical challenge. Recent research has focussed on the development of tissue-engineered and cell-based approaches for the treatment of cartilage and osteochondral injuries, with current clinically available cell-based approaches including autologous chondrocyte implantation and matrix-assisted autologous chondrocyte implantation. However, these approaches have significant disadvantages due to the requirement for a two-stage surgical procedure and an in vitro chondrocyte expansion phase which increases logistical challenges, hospital times and costs.

Androgen-producing steroid cell ovarian tumors are rare, comprising less than 1% of ovarian neoplasms, and can present with infertility and rapid virilization. Here we discuss the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with an unusually insidious 2-year history of infertility, hirsutism, and clitoromegaly who was found to have an elevated serum testosterone and a left ovarian mass. She underwent oophorectomy and pathology revealed a steroid cell tumor, not otherwise specified (NOS), with no malignant features.

Health anxiety is a chronic mental health condition that exerts substantial personal and economic burdens on patients, providers, and the larger healthcare system. Patients with health anxiety experience persistent worry and dread over the possibility that they are presently ill with an undetected or poorly defined physical illness or may soon become ill despite an absence of evidence and physician reassurance of wellness. A complication of health anxiety is that the sufferer frequently denies the presence of excessive anxiety, typically attributing their distress to an inability of the medical team to correctly identify the feared illness.

Contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is thought to develop and be maintained by excessive propensity to experience disgust, particularly in response to perceived contaminants, and dysfunctional threat appraisals pertaining to illness. The present studies attempted to integrate these lines of research by testing the degree to which contamination-based OCD is associated with individual differences in disgust propensity and sensitivity, affective distress in response to perceived contaminants, and perceived threat of illness. In Study 1, a convenience sample of 185 adults completed self-report scales assessing obsessive-compulsive symptoms, disgust propensity and sensitivity, germ aversion, and perceived infectability.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) tumor microenvironment (TME) characteristics, such as tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) densities and PD-L1 status, are predictive of recurrence, disease-free survival, and overall survival. In many malignancies, TME characteristics are also predictive of response to immunotherapy. As window of opportunity studies using neoadjuvant immunotherapy become more common and treatment guidelines incorporate TME features, accurate assessment of the pre-treatment TME using the biopsy specimen is critical.

The effects of intravenous (IV) fluid warming on core body temperature in a group of dogs undergoing an elective orthopedic procedure was studied. An IV fluid warmer was used alone or in conjunction with forced warmed air to determine the individual or additive effects of IV fluid warming. These effects were compared to those in dogs with no heat support or those with only forced warmed air in a randomized prospective study design.

Tissue-engineered corneal constructs offer the potential of readily available corneal substitutes for transplantation. As with all medical devices and implants, these constructs require rigorous safety assessments, combined with well-described analyses of the implant's physical and biological characteristics. Although the constructs are developed in vitro, such studies are currently unable to fully emulate the complex biomechanical and biochemical conditions within living tissue, as well as the interplay between this environment and immunological factors.

Objective: To determine the antidepressant mechanism of action for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in healthy women. Our primary hypothesis was that a single session of left DLPFC rTMS, compared with a session of right DLPFC rTMS, would result in better (reduced) negative nonaffective switch costs in healthy women.
