Objective: Timely access to data is needed to improve care for substance-exposed birthing persons and their infants, a significant public health problem in the United States. We examined the current state of birthing person and infant/child (dyad) data-sharing capabilities supported by health information exchange (HIE) standards and HIE network capabilities for data exchange to inform point-of-care needs assessment for the substance-exposed dyad.
Material And Methods: A cross-map analysis was performed using a set of dyadic data elements focused on pediatric development and longitudinal supportive care for substance-exposed dyads (70 birthing person and 110 infant/child elements).
Background: Although it is well established that antibiotic prophylaxis is not needed in soft tissue upper extremity cases, there is still no definitive consensus when hardware implantation is involved. We hypothesize that antibiotic prophylaxis is not necessary and there is no difference in postoperative surgical site infection rates regardless of preoperative antibiotic administration.
Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on upper extremity surgical cases with hardware implantation performed at a single institution amongst 5 hand surgeons between November 2021 and November 2023.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted nursing education and required modification of instructional methods and clinical experiences. Given the variation in education, rapid transition to virtual platforms, and NCLEX-RN testing stressors, this cohort faced unique losses and gains influencing their transition into clinical practice.
Purpose: This study examined the impact of COVID-19 and preparedness for professional practice of 340 new graduate nurses (NGNs) at an academic medical center.
Introduction: Trends in utilization of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems can be used to extrapolate future use of an EMS system, which will be valuable for the budgeting and planning of finances and resources. The best model for incorporation of seasonal and regional fluctuations in utilization to predict future utilization is unknown.
Problem: Authors aimed to trend patterns of utilization in a regional EMS system to identify the needs of a growing population and to allow for a better understanding of how the EMS system is used on a basis of call volume and frequency of EMS transportation.
Opioid misuse is a national health crisis that requires sustained treatment, prevention, and recovery efforts. This study evaluates the innovative treatment approaches that two states - Kentucky and Missouri - implemented in their states using State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis Grant (Opioid STR) program funds from the Substance Abuse Mental Health and Services Administration (SAMHSA), as well as preliminary findings from the Opioid STR national, cross-site evaluation that is funded and managed by SAMHSA. The Kentucky approach discusses the Emergency Department (ED) bridge model, which links patients discharged from EDs to appropriate professional treatment and recovery services.

Legislation since 2013 has created paths to reduce opioid overdose deaths and since, basic life support (BLS) and police agencies have been administering naloxone to patients with suspected opioid overdoses as part of standard treatment protocols. Charts were reviewed from 1 January 2016 to 15 April 2016 on the de-identified electronic medical records of patients in a two-county system comprising the 'Jersey Shore' who received naloxone to determine the number of naloxone administrations and heroin overdoses.

This study aimed to determine the frequency of repeat naloxone dosing in suspected narcotic overdose (OD) patients and identify patient characteristics.
Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients over 17 years of age with suspected opioid overdose, treated with an initial intranasal (IN) dose of naloxone and subsequently managed by paramedics, was performed from April 2014 to June 2016.
Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) outbreaks are uncommon in Europe. In June 2014, two EIEC outbreaks occurred in Nottingham, UK, within 2 days; outbreak A was linked to a takeaway restaurant and outbreak B to a wedding party. We conducted 2 analytical studies: a case-control study for outbreak A and a cohort study for outbreak B.

The mechanism of action by which the cation exerts its therapeutic influence is unknown. A knowledge of brain Li concentration, its distribution in the brain, and its properties in the cellular microenvironment may have a strong influence on the understanding of Li function.

To understand the interaction of lithium (Li+) with a coadministered drug in both the blood and the brain, we have treated rats with either Li+ alone or Li+ and a codrug. In this paper we address the important problem of quantitation of intra and extracellular Li+ ion contents in blood by the 7Li-NMR technique and the use of a shift reagent (SR). Although Li+ can be studied by atomic absorption techniques, these techniques involve tedious separation of intra- and extracellular components prior to chemical analysis.

Replacement of the tubes is costly, time- and effort-intensive, uncomfortable for the patients, and potentially dangerous.
Objective: To determine the best of three methods for securing nasogastric tubes in a medical intensive care population and to identify variables related to the failure of tube securing methods.

A single pair of Glu and Lys residues has been placed at four different spacings, and in both orientations, in an otherwise neutral alanine-glutamine peptide helix, and the contribution to helix stability of the different Glu-Lys interactions has been measured. The contribution from the interaction of each charged side chain with the helix macrodipole has also been determined. A side-chain interaction between Gln and Glu, when the spacing is (i,i+4), has been detected and quantified.

Short, 16-residue, alanine-based peptides show stable alpha-helix formation in H2O. This result is surprising when contrasted with the classical view that regards the alpha-helix as a marginally stable structure in H2O and considers short helices unstable. The alanine-based peptides are solubilized by insertion of three or more residues of a single charge type, lysine (+) or glutamic acid (-).

In spite of normal thymic histology, thymocyte subsets and blastogenesis, thymus gland products (thymosins) have yet to be studied. In the present report, thymus gland function was studied by measuring thymosin alpha 1 levels at one time point in the BB rat compared with control rates, and BB rat responses to exogenous thymosin (Thymosin fraction 5) were observed.
