Article Synopsis
  • Growing interest exists regarding the interaction between individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the criminal justice system (CJS), but findings on whether they offend more than non-ASD individuals remain unclear.
  • A study spanning 17 years examined the rate of CJS contact among adults diagnosed with ASD, revealing that nearly 25% had some involvement as potential suspects, with increased risk linked to being male, having ADHD, and experiencing psychosis.
  • This research aims to identify factors influencing offending behavior in people with ASD, suggesting that mental health services could play a role in reducing CJS contact by providing necessary support or treatment for co-occurring conditions.
