MEMS Reliability: On-Chip Testing for the Characterization of the Out-of-Plane Polysilicon Strength.

Polycrystalline silicon is a brittle material, and its strength results are stochastically linked to microscale (or even nanoscale) defects, possibly dependent on the grain size and morphology. In this paper, we focus on the out-of-plane tensile strength of columnar polysilicon. The investigation has been carried out through a combination of a newly proposed setup for on-chip testing and finite element analyses to properly interpret the collected data.

Peanut allergy in Italy: A unique Italian perspective.

Background: Peanut allergy has not been well characterized in Italy.

Objective: Our aim was to better define the clinical features of peanut allergy in Italy and to detect the peanut proteins involved in allergic reactions.

Methods: A total of 22 centers participated in a prospective survey of peanut allergy over a 6-month period.

Anaphylactic Reactions After Discontinuation of Hymenoptera Venom Immunotherapy: A Clonal Mast Cell Disorder Should Be Suspected.

Background: Up to 75% of patients with severe anaphylactic reactions after Hymenoptera sting are at risk of further severe reactions if re-stung. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is highly effective in protecting individuals with ascertained Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) and previous severe reactions. After a 3- to 5-year VIT course, most patients remain protected after VIT discontinuation.

The Alpine LGM in the boreal ice-sheets game.

New chronologic and stratigraphic constraints from the Garda morainic amphitheater define the extension of the last glaciation in the Adige-Sarca system and improve the Alpine LGM dataset. Together with the available chronology of the Rhine and Tagliamento systems, our results indicate a synchronous maximum culmination of Alpine glaciers during the LGM, which anticipated by about 3.5 ka the maximum extension of the Eurasian Ice Sheet (EIS).

Sensorial, biochemical and molecular changes in Raboso Piave grape berries applying "Double Maturation Raisonnée" and late harvest techniques.

At ripening, Vitis vinifera cv Raboso Piave grapes have high acidity, which results in an astringent wine that is not easy to drink. To overcome this limitation, several researches have attempted to alter the polyphenols profile mainly by applying different harvest techniques. The aim of this work was to investigate sensorial, biochemical, and molecular changes in Raboso Piave grape berries subjected to delayed harvests as Late Harvest (LH) and "Double Maturation Raisonnée" (DMR) techniques.

Grape berry ripening delay induced by a pre-véraison NAA treatment is paralleled by a shift in the expression pattern of auxin- and ethylene-related genes.

Background: Auxins act as repressors of ripening inception in grape (véraison), while ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) play a positive role as inducers of the syndrome. Despite the increasing amount of information made available on this topic, the complex network of interactions among these hormones remains elusive. In order to shed light on these aspects, a holistic approach was adopted to evaluate, at the transcriptomic level, the crosstalk between hormones in grape berries, whose ripening progression was delayed by applying naphtalenacetic acid (NAA) one week before véraison.

Chronic cough and eosinophilic esophagitis: an uncommon association.

An increasing number of children, usually with gastrointestinal symptoms, is diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), and a particular subset of these patients complains of airway manifestations. We present the case of a 2-year-old child with chronic dry cough in whom EE was found after a first diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) due to pathological 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring. Traditional allergologic tests were negative, while patch tests were diagnostic for cow's milk allergy.

Local angioedema following sun exposures: a report of five cases.

Angioedema is a hereditary or acquired disease characterized by localized non-pitting swelling of the subcutaneous tissue which can affect either skin or mucous membranes. Acquired angioedema can often be related to a heterogeneous group of etiological factors including physical stimuli, although up to 38% of cases remain idiopathic. We describe 5 patients who developed an angioedema following sun exposures.

Isotype switching and titer variation of anti-Ro/SSA antibodies over time in 100 patients with undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD).

RNA extraction from plant tissues: the use of calcium to precipitate contaminating pectic sugars.

Several protocols and commercial kits are used for the extraction of nucleic acids from different plant tissues. Although there are several procedures available to remove sugars, which hinder the extraction of clean genomic DNA, there are few to assist with extraction of RNA. Those presently used include precipitations with ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or lithium chloride (LiCl), or centrifugation in cesium chloride (CsCl) gradients, but these generally either do not allow high recovery of RNA, are time consuming, rely on hazardous chemicals or need special equipment.

Idiopathic eosinophilic pneumonia and pregnancy: report of a case.

A case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia and pregnancy is reported. In 1989, a 24-year-old woman with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia became pregnant. We decided not to stop steroid therapy.

Deforming arthropathy of the hands in systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with antibodies to SSA/Ro and to SSB/La.

Thirteen patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and deforming arthropathy (DA) of the hands were compared with 111 patients with SLE without deforming arthropathy. Clinical features were comparable in the two groups. Patients fulfilling criteria for mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) were not included in the present study.
