Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) is a respiratory-gating technique adopted in radiation therapy to lower cardiac irradiation. When performing DIBH treatments, it is important to have a monitoring system to ensure the patient's breath hold level is stable and reproducible at each fraction. In this retrospective study, we developed a system capable of monitoring DIBH breast treatments by utilizing cine EPID images taken during treatment.

Evaluation of the ITV-margin and variables affecting bladder and mesorectal deformation during long course neoadjuvant radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

Internal target volume (ITV) margins were estimated by evaluating the movement of mesorectum and bladder during neoadjuvant long-course radiation therapy (RT) for rectal cancer. In this prospective study, 23 patients with rectal cancer had planning CT (pCT) and weekly cone beam CT (CBCT) in supine position during preoperative long-course RT. Mesorectal wall motion was analyzed based on the coordinates of the most anterior, posterior, left and right points on the pCT and CBCT.

The acquisition of daily megavoltage (MV)-CT images provides an invaluable tool in the delivery of adaptive radiotherapy (ART) on the TomoTherapy Hi-ART II system. Using TomoTherapy's Planned Adaptive software, delivery sinograms can be applied to pre-treatment MVCT images to generate daily delivered dose distributions, allowing for the potential comparison of planned and delivered doses. However, daily patient anatomical variations complicate the task and accurate comparison requires that daily doses be evaluated in the same references frame as the planned dose.

Characterization, prediction, and correction of geometric distortion in 3 T MR images.

The work presented herein describes our methods and results for predicting, measuring and correcting geometric distortions in a 3 T clinical magnetic resonance (MR) scanner for the purpose of image guidance in radiation treatment planning. Geometric inaccuracies due to both inhomogeneities in the background field and nonlinearities in the applied gradients were easily visualized on the MR images of a regularly structured three-dimensional (3D) grid phantom. From a computed tomography scan, the locations of just under 10 000 control points within the phantom were accurately determined in three dimensions using a MATLAB-based computer program.

Distribution of the uncoupling protein 2 mRNA in the mouse brain.

The present study was conducted to investigate the brain distribution of the recently cloned uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2). Northern blot analyses were first carried out to confirm the presence of UCP2 in the brain. These analyses revealed the brain presence of UCP2 mRNA and the absence of the mRNAs encoding uncoupling protein 1 and uncoupling protein 3.

Trends in antibiotic resistance of staphylococci over an eight-year period: differences in the emergence of resistance between coagulase positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci.

The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 1058 Staphylococcus aureus and 2,163 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolates obtained from clinical specimen between 1988 and 1995, were determined against 13 anti-staphylococcal antibiotics. During the study period the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, and norfloxacin increased significantly by 7%, 4%, and 6%, respectively (p < or = 0.001).

The impact of gonadal hormone withdrawal and estrogen therapy was investigated on the rat dopamine transporter (DAT). Short-term ovariectomized (ST-OVX, 2 weeks) and long-term ovariectomized (LT-OVX, 3 months) rats were treated or not with 17beta-estradiol (E2) for 2 weeks. DAT mRNA expression was measured by in situ hybridization in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) for the nigrostriatal pathway and the ventral tegmental area (VTA) for the mesolimbic pathway whereas DAT levels were assessed by [3H]GBR-12935 autoradiography, respectively, in the striatum and the nucleus accumbens.

Expression of CRF messenger RNA (mRNA) and heteronuclear RNA (hnRNA) as well as the mRNAs encoding the CRF receptors of type 1 (CRF1R) and type 2 alpha (CFR2R) in the brain has been investigated in lean (Fa/?) and obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats. Exonic and intronic in situ hybridization histochemistry was employed to measure the mRNA and hnRNA levels in rats killed before (resting state), during, and 120 min after a treadmill running session. Corynebacterium species are increasingly being implicated in foreign-body infections and in immunocompromised-host infections. However, there are no specific recommendations on the method or the criteria to use in order to determine the in vitro activities of the antibiotics commonly used to treat Corynebacterium infections.
