The early stages of phase evolution, not available for nanometer polymer blend films spin-cast from solutions of incompatible mixtures, have been examined for films prepared from nanoparticles of deuterated polystyrene/ poly(methyl methacrylate) blends (1:1 mass fraction of dPS/PMMA) with PS-PMMA diblock copolymer additives. The initial phase arrangement, confined to the size of nanoparticles, has provided the homogeneity of the initial film composition. The early stages of structure formation, promoted by annealing and traced with atomic and lateral force microscopy (AFM, LFM) as well as secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), resulted in bilayers, observed commonly for as-prepared solvent-cast blends.

In an attempt to obviate some of the problems associated with autografts, including limited donor tissue and donor site morbidity, we aimed to synthesize a synthetic nerve guidance channel that would perform as well as the nerve autograft. Given that the patency of the nerve guidance channel is critical for repair, we investigated a series of nerve guidance channel designs where patency and the resulting regenerative capacity were compared in a transected rat sciatic nerve injury model.

Transparent chitin hydrogel tubes were synthesized, for the first time, from chitosan solutions using acylation chemistry and mold casting techniques. Alkaline hydrolysis of chitin tubes resulted in chitosan tubes, with the extent of hydrolysis controlling the resulting amine content.

We present two approaches to control the dimensions of phase separation in thin polymer-blend layers; both rely on polymer nanospheres prepared by the miniemulsion process. In the first approach, heterophase solid layers are prepared from an aqueous dispersion containing nanoparticles of two polymers, whereas in the second approach, both polymers are already contained in each individual nanoparticle.
