Background: Little information is available about the clinical history of patients with incidentally detected splanchnic vein thrombosis and its therapeutic management remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors, therapeutic strategies, and long-term outcomes of incidentally detected splanchnic vein thrombosis.
Methods: We analysed data from patients with incidentally detected splanchnic vein thrombosis who were enrolled in an international, multicentre, prospective cohort study of splanchnic vein thrombosis between 2008 and 2012.
ALS is a relentlessly progressive and fatal disease, with no curative therapies available to date. Symptomatic and palliative care, provided in a multidisciplinary context, still remains the cornerstone of ALS management. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the disease has advanced greatly over the past years, giving new hope for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Materials and Methods This study was approved by the local ethical committee, and written informed consent was obtained from all subjects before enrollment. Twenty-eight patients with LMN-predominant disease were compared with 55 patients with ALS and 56 healthy control subjects.

Methods: One hundred one patients with sporadic MND (56 classic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, 31 upper motor neuron phenotype, and 14 lower motor neuron phenotype) and 51 controls were enrolled. Patients were classified into MND with a pure motor syndrome (MND-motor) and with cognitive/behavioral symptoms (MND-plus).
Background: This study describes our experience with laryngeal mask (LM) inserted after anesthetic induction in patients already in knee-chest position for lumbar neurosurgery.
Methods: Airway management (need for LM repositioning, orotracheal intubation because of failed LM insertion), anticipated difficult airway, and airway complications were registered. Statistics were compared between groups with the t test or the χ test, as appropriate.
The novel direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been proposed as alternatives to low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in orthopedic surgery. However, the clinical impact of postsurgical bleeding with the DOACs has not been extensively evaluated. MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, supplemented with conference abstract books and www.

The aim of this article was to assess the role of ATXN2 intermediate length repeats in a large series of Italian and Sardinian ALS patients and controls carrying a pathogenetic C9ORF72 GGGGCC hexanucleotide repeat. A total of 1972 ALS cases were identified through the database of the Italian ALS Genetic consortium, a collaborative effort including 18 ALS centers throughout Italy.

The prognosis for this tumor is poor, with survival rates among the lowest of all soft tissue sarcomas. Surgery is the best approach for localized disease.

Compression ultrasonography can be extended to the entire deep venous system (whole-leg) or restricted to the proximal veins only (limited), and the two approaches are clinically equivalent. We aimed to assess the diagnostic value of an algorithm combining whole-leg and limited compression ultrasonography.

Methods: Twenty mGEP-NEC patients were treated with cisplatin or carboplatin/etoposide between April 2010 and October 2014. Both large-cell and small-cell histologies were included.
Purpose: To assess brachial plexus magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features and limb-girdle muscle abnormalities as signs of muscle denervation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Materials And Methods: This study was approved by the local ethical committees on human studies, and written informed consent was obtained from all subjects before enrollment. By using an optimized protocol of brachial plexus MR imaging, brachial plexus and limb-girdle muscle abnormalities were evaluated in 23 patients with ALS and clinical and neurophysiologically active involvement of the upper limbs and were compared with MR images in 12 age-matched healthy individuals.
It is generally recommended that patients with splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) should receive a minimum of 3 months of anticoagulant treatment. However, little information is available on the long-term risk of recurrent thrombotic events. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of venous and arterial thrombosis after discontinuation of vitamin K antagonist (VKA) in SVT patients.

Approximately 5%-10% of cases are familial (FALS) and the remaining are sporadic (SALS). To date FUS mutations are responsible for 4%-6% of familial cases as well as 0.

Objective: To assess the incidence rates of bleeding, thrombotic events, and mortality in a large international cohort of patients with SVT.
Design, Setting, And Participants: A prospective cohort study was conducted beginning May 2, 2008, and completed January 30, 2014, at hospital-based centers specialized in the management of thromboembolic disorders; a 2-year follow-up period was completed January 30, 2014, and data analysis was conducted from July 1, 2014, to February 28, 2015.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The current therapeutic options for patients at high thromboembolic risk include the vitamin K antagonists and the direct oral anticoagulants. These novel agents have been evaluated in more than 40,000 patients enrolled in four large randomized controlled trials for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Our objective was to assess the association between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). From May 2007 through August 2012 we investigated 146 patients with newly diagnosed ALS and 146 age- and gender-matched controls. Each individual was screened for cardinal extrapyramidal signs (neurological examination) and cognitive dysfunction (Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE and Frontal Assessment Battery, FAB).

Introduction: Starting doses of tacrolimus and ciclosporin are typically chosen on a calculated mg/kg bodyweight basis. After initiation of treatment, doses are adjusted with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). This trial-and-error approach has been accepted by most physicians and pharmacists involved in the care of transplanted patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The treatment of splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) is challenging, due to the increased risk of bleeding and potentially life-threatening complications. Current recommendations are based on evidence from the treatment of venous thrombosis in usual sites, but small observational studies in SVT population suggest that the bleeding risk may offset the benefit of anticoagulant treatment in this setting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in SVT patients.

Methods: T1-weighted and DT MRI were collected from 121 subjects: 35 motor neuron disease (MND), 14 behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia, 12 semantic and 11 nonfluent primary progressive aphasia, 21 progressive supranuclear palsy syndrome patients, and 28 healthy controls. Patterns of GM atrophy were established using voxel-based morphometry.

Introduction: Dual antiplatelet therapy is the standard of care for patients with acute coronary syndromes or with recent coronary stents implantation. P2Y12 receptor antagonists have shown to reduce the risk of recurrent ischemic events among these patients, at the expense of an increased risk of bleeding. Cangrelor is a novel, intravenous, short-acting, reversible platelet P2Y12 inhibitor, which has been evaluated for the treatment of arterial thrombosis.

Anticoagulant treatment can be currently instituted with two different classes of drugs: the vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and the newer, "novel" or non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant drugs (NOACs). The NOACs have several practical advantages over VKAs, such as the rapid onset/offset of action, the lower potential for food and drug interactions, and the predictable anticoagulant response. However, the VKAs currently have a broader spectrum of indications, a standardized monitoring test, and established reversal strategies.
