Article Synopsis
  • * This study tested the FDA-approved antibiotic minocycline as a potential antiviral against different IAV strains and found that it effectively inhibits viral replication without being toxic.
  • * Minocycline's antiviral action targets the MEK/ERK signaling pathway, blocks the assembly and release of new virus particles, and reduces late-stage cell death caused by the virus, highlighting its potential as an alternative treatment for IAV.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the genetic dynamics of human adenoviruses (HAdV) is crucial for managing outbreaks and creating effective interventions, as highlighted during the 2022-2023 outbreak in West Bengal.
  • Researchers sequenced the genomes of 24 samples and discovered a new recombinant strain combining features of type 3 and type 7 HAdV, suggesting recent mutations in India.
  • The study indicated that current strains of HAdV can evade host immunity and may lead to more severe respiratory infections, emphasizing the need for comprehensive genomic analysis to assess outbreak potential.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) causes acute respiratory infections leading to mortality in children. This study analyzes the circulating respiratory HAdV genotypes in West Bengal, India during 2018-2022 among symptomatic patients. The overall positivity rate was 6.

Globally, different genotypes of human adenoviruses are associated with outbreaks of acute respiratory infection (ARI) though such evidence is lacking from India. In the present study, we report a sudden increase in the positivity of respiratory adenovirus among hospitalized children with ARI from Kolkata and the surrounding districts of West Bengal, India, from December 2022 to date. A sharp rise in the positivity rate of respiratory adenovirus was found which ranged from 22.

Article Synopsis
  • The study conducted in Kolkata from January 2018 to March 2020 aimed to assess the prevalence and patterns of major viral gastroenteritis agents among children under five years old, highlighting the predominant role of GARV.
  • Out of 3157 stool samples analyzed, around 40% tested positive for enteric viruses, with GARV showing the highest positivity rate, followed by HAdV-F, AstV, and NoV, while co-infections were noted in 5.31% of cases.
  • The findings suggest a decline in GARV prevalence compared to earlier years and indicate the need for ongoing surveillance to monitor the impact of the GARV vaccine on viral gastroenteritis in the region.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 has been continuously evolving since late 2019, leading to the emergence of new variants and contributing to pandemic waves in countries like India.
  • * Researchers analyzed SARS-CoV-2 sequences from the GISAID database and identified a novel variant, B.1.1.526, characterized by 11 mutations, including D614G, P681H, and E484K, predominantly found in seven Indian states.
  • * The study highlights that specific mutations associated with this variant may enhance its transmissibility and infectivity, indicating potential implications for vaccine efficacy and public health responses.*
