Bridging the gap in precision medicine: TranSYS training programme for next-generation scientists.

Introduction: In the evolving healthcare landscape, precision medicine's rise necessitates adaptable doctoral training. The European Union has recognized this and promotes the development of international, training-focused programmes called Innovative Training Networks (ITNs). In this article, we introduce TranSYS, an ITN focused on educating the next generation of precision medicine researchers.

The EUROFUNG network is a virtual centre of multidisciplinary expertise in the field of fungal biotechnology. The first academic-industry Think Tank was hosted by EUROFUNG to summarise the state of the art and future challenges in fungal biology and biotechnology in the coming decade. Currently, fungal cell factories are important for bulk manufacturing of organic acids, proteins, enzymes, secondary metabolites and active pharmaceutical ingredients in white and red biotechnology.

The relative magnitude of the effects of biological and physical settlement cues for cypris larvae of the acorn barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides L.

Barnacle cypris larvae respond to many cues when selecting a settlement site. The settlement of over a million larvae on tiles of different textures, orientations and densities of incumbent settlers was measured on the rocky intertidal at Great Cumbrae, Scotland. Half of the tiles were replaced every tide whereas the others simultaneously accumulated settlers.

Field-based video observations of wild barnacle cyprid behaviour in response to textural and chemical settlement cues.

Many marine invertebrate larvae respond behaviourally to environmental settlement cues, yet behaviours are often only inferred from settlement patterns or are limited to laboratory studies. The behaviour of wild cypris larvae of Semibalanus balanoides L. was filmed on settlement tiles in the field.

The effect of depth on the accrual of marine biofilms on glass substrata deployed in the Clyde Sea, Scotland.

Recent concerns about fouling problems caused by biofilms affecting optical oceanographic instruments have highlighted the need for a better understanding of their nature and extent in the marine environment. Glass slides were deployed in April and August for periods of up to 3 weeks at 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 m in the water column of Loch Fyne, Clyde Sea, W Scotland. Biofilms were enumerated using epifluorescence and bright field microscopy.

The effect of gregariousness in cyprid settlement assays.

The in vitro settlement assay using cyprids of Balanus. amphitrite is an important tool in basic and applied research. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of gregariousness within these assays, and to determine the interaction between gregariousness and container size, and settlement promoters and inhibitors.
