Article Synopsis
  • An angiosperm seed is made up of the embryo, endosperm, and maternal seed coat, all of which interact to ensure proper development after fertilization.
  • Auxin from the endosperm triggers the formation of the seed coat, while the seed coat communicates back with the endosperm to enhance its growth through brassinosteroids (BR).
  • BR influences the structure and properties of the seed coat, which in turn affects how quickly the endosperm can grow, independent of when it actually forms.

HER2-Low is defined as low levels of HER2 expression, based on a score of 1+ on immunohistochemical (IHC) assay or as an IHC score of 2+ and negative results on in situ hybridization (ISH or FISH). They are a heterogeneous population of breast cancers that vary in prognosis and sensitivity to systemic treatments. The frequency and clinical characteristics of pathogenic germline variants (PGVs) in HER2-Low breast cancer (BC) patients is not defined.

The persistence of the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) infection on the cervical epithelium contributes to the progression of cervical cancer. Studies have demonstrated that HPV16 genetic variants may be associated with different risks of developing cervical cancer. However, the E5 oncoprotein of HPV16, which is related to several cellular mechanisms in the initial phases of the infection and thus contributes to carcinogenesis, is still little studied.

  • "Purple Drank" is a drink combining promethazine and codeine, known for its hallucinogenic effects but can be dangerous in high doses.
  • The study investigated how these drugs bind to human serum albumin (HSA) using high-performance affinity chromatography, finding PMZ and its metabolites bind strongly to HSA while codeine has a lower binding affinity.
  • Displacement experiments and molecular docking indicated that all three compounds bind to HSA at both sites, with competition mainly between PMZ and codeine occurring at site II, and the binding wasn't affected by the chirality (enantiomers).

Since the discovery of brassinolide in the pollen of rapeseed, brassinosteroids (BRs) have consistently been associated with reproductive traits. However, compared to what is known for how BRs shape vegetative development, the understanding of how these hormones regulate reproductive traits is comparatively still lacking. Nevertheless, there is now considerable evidence that BRs regulate almost all aspects of reproduction, from ovule and pollen formation to seed and fruit development.

Cervical cancer is associated with persistent infections by high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types that may have nucleotide polymorphisms and, consequently, different oncogenic potentials. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the genetic variability and structural effects of the E7 oncogene of HPV58 in cervical scraping samples from Brazilian women. The study was developed with patients from hospitals in the metropolitan area of Recife, PE, Brazil.

Diverse approaches have been explored as chromatographic supports for chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in liquid chromatography (LC), such as the introduction of nanoparticles, superficially porous particles, and new materials including monoliths, metal-organic frameworks, covalent-organic frameworks as well as hybrid chromatographic supports. Nevertheless, silica-based CSPs are still nowadays the most successfully and widely applied. In this review, the most relevant achievements related with chromatographic supports used for development of CSPs for LC are described.

Polysaccharides arouse great interest due to their structure and unique properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and absence of toxicity. Polysaccharides from marine sources are particularly useful due to the wide variety of applications and biological activities. Chitosan, a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is an example of an interesting bioactive marine-derived polysaccharide.

Three new species of are described from the continental shelf of the Campos Basin, southwest Atlantic, Brazil. differs from all other species in the presence of two anterior testes, slender spicules with enlarged proximal ends, 7-11 pre-cloacal papilliform supplements, and females with a pair of constriction structures, one on each branch of the ovary. shows sexual dimorphism in the size of the amphidial fovea, which occupies 100% of the diameter of the corresponding area in the male; the buccal cavity provided with five teeth and a slightly cuticularized cuticular ring.

The endocannabinoid system modulates the stress coping strategies in the dorsolateral periaqueductal grey (dlPAG). The most relevant endocannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) exert inhibitory control over defensive reactions mediated by the dlPAG. However, the protective role of anandamide is limited by its lack of effect in higher concentrations.

In this work, a new magnetic ligand fishing probe for discovery of DPP-IV inhibitory ligands was developed and it was tested as a proof of concept on the fruit extract of Vaccinium vitis-idaea (lingonberry). The ligands were shown to have appreciable dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory activity (IC50: 31.8 μg mL-1).

  • The study aimed to analyze factors linked to the deaths of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Espírito Santo, Brazil.
  • The research utilized secondary data and logistic regression models to determine odds ratios for various demographics and conditions.
  • Key findings indicated that older individuals, particularly those over 60, as well as patients with multiple comorbidities and those admitted to public hospitals, faced significantly higher mortality rates.

Persistent infections by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are a necessary condition, but not sufficient for cervical cancer development. Genetic variants of HR-HPV appear to be related to the risk of persistent infections. The study performed a functional evaluation of variants of the HPV-31 promoter region (LCR).

Persistent infections caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are important, for the development of cervical lesions, but environmental and genetic factors are also related in the process of carcinogenesis. Among the genetic factors, the genetic variants of HR-HPV appear to be related to the risk of persistent infections. Therefore, the present study investigates variants of HPV31 E5 oncogene in cervical scraping samples from Brazilian women to assess their functional and structural effects, in order to identify possible repercussions of these variants on the infectious and carcinogenic process.

Populational ageing is a current phenomenon and calls for the reconfiguration of health services and expansion of access for the elderly. This is a cross-sectional study with 6,624 elderly Brazilians over 60 that set out to evaluate access to healthcare by measuring lack of access and by describing the trajectory until recourse to hospitalization, emergency care and medical visits. The variables were analyzed according to the nature of funding to access the service (SUS, private insurance and cash-payment).

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) are often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, particularly involving oncogenes like E6, E7, and E5 which drive malignant progression.
  • While effective HPV vaccines exist, treatments for existing cervical neoplasia are limited, and late diagnosis leads to poorer outcomes; conventional methods like surgery and chemotherapy are often ineffective for high-grade lesions.
  • Emerging genetic immunotherapy, particularly DNA vaccines targeting HPV, show promise in clinical trials and suggest a potential for improved treatment through combination approaches involving these vaccines along with other therapies like radiotherapy and immuno-modulators.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to estimate how common latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is among primary health care workers in Vitória, Brazil, and to identify related risk factors.
  • The research involved a survey and tuberculin skin tests (TST) administered to 218 health workers, revealing a positivity rate of 39.4% at the ≥ 10-mm cut-off and 54.1% at ≥ 5-mm.
  • The findings highlighted that community health agents had the highest TST positivity, and previous TST results significantly increased the likelihood of testing positive; thus, the study recommends regular LTBI screenings and enhanced biosafety measures for these workers.
