Mauthner neurons (MN)*, specific multifunctional neurons of fish, are a unique object for investigating the adaptive potentialities of the cell. The goal of the work was to study the structure of MN of fish Percсottus glehni during wintering under the conditions of hypothermia and deficit of oxygen and energy substrates. It was shown using a light microscope that the volume of the somatic moiety of neurons changes slightly at the beginning of wintering and is significantly reduced by the termination of wintering.

Primary memory impairments associated with increased level of amyloid-β (Aβ) in the brain have been shown to be linked, partially, with early pathological changes in the entorhinal cortex (EC) which spread on the whole limbic system. While the hippocampus is known to play a key role in learning and memory mechanisms, it is as yet unclear how its structures are involved in the EC pathology. In this study, changes in memory and neuronal morphology in male Wistar rats intrahippocampally injected with Aβ25-35 were correlated on days 14 and 45 after the injection to reveal specific cognitive-structural associations.

Gene expression of mGluR2, mGluR3 and mGluR5 was evaluated in the hippocampus and frontal cortex in Wistar rats in 1 and 4 weeks after bilateral microinjection of kainic acid into the dorsal hippocampus. The time-course of the receptors' expression suggested their adaptive role in response on the induction of excitotoxicity. It was assumed that the decrease of kainate-induced neurodegeneration could be achieved through simultaneous activation of presynaptic mGluRs and inhibition of mGlu postsynaptic receptors.

It was shown that the 250-fold screening of the geomagnetic field (GMF) ("zero" magnetic field with an induction of 0.2 muT) affects early embryogenesis and the reproduction capacity of mice in vivo. Pregnant NMRI mice at the zygote stage placed in this "zero" magnetic field (MF) lost the ability to bear offspring babies although their embryos developed up to the blastocyst stage without any visible deviations from the norm.

Cycloheximide (CHI), an inhibitor of protein synthesis, is widely used for studying the mechanisms of consolidation of long-term memory (LTM). High concentrations of CHI inhibit the protein synthesis in brain homogenates by more than 80% and impair LTM consolidation.
