Breast involvement with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is rare. Patients with AIDS have an increased incidence of NHL, often with high-grade histology, extranodal presentation and aggressive clinical course. Lymphoma of the breast in patients with HIV-1 infection has not been reported.

Context: Enhanced expression of GLUT1, a facilitative glucose transporter found on red blood cells, blood-brain barrier, and perineurium, has been described in a large spectrum of epithelial malignancies.

Objective: We present an immunohistochemical survey of GLUT1 expression in benign and malignant fallopian tube epithelia, and compare serous carcinomas of the fallopian tube and ovary.

Design: One hundred two routinely fixed and processed archival specimens (36 benign fallopian tubes, 29 primary tubal adenocarcinomas, and 37 primary ovarian adenocarcinomas) were immunostained with rabbit anti-GLUT1 and developed with streptavidin-biotin/diaminobenzidine.

Context: Non-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining malignancies that occur in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the demographics and pathologic features associated with these malignancies have not been completely defined.

Objective: This study describes the age of onset of malignant disease in patients seropositive for HIV and in control patients presumed to be negative for HIV, but with the same primary site. We compare the demographics and histopathology for both groups.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), a potent ubiquitous endogenous inhibitor of epithelial cell growth, is secreted as a latent molecule (LTGF-beta)requiring activation for function. TGF-beta signals through the type I(TbetaRI) and type II (TbetaRII) receptors, which cooperate to phosphorylate/activate Smad2/3, the transcriptional regulators of genes that induce cell cycle arrest. That carcinomas grow in vivo suggests that they are refractory to TGF-beta.
