Background And Aims: Baseline difference in the perfusion of two lungs is the cause of intra-operative shunt during one-lung ventilation (OLV). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the gradient of end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO) between two lungs in lateral position (D-EtCO) would predict the quantity of shunt and hence the drop in the oxygenation during OLV.
Methods: An observational study was conducted to include consecutive 70 patients undergoing thoracic surgery using a double-lumen tube in a lateral position.
Commercial cultivation of Spirulina sp. is highly popular due to the presence of high amount of C-phycocyanin (C-PC) and other valuable chemicals like carotenoids and γ-linolenic acid. In this study, the pH and the concentrations of nitrogen and carbon source were manipulated to achieve improved cell growth and C-PC production in NaCl-tolerant mutant of Spirulina platensis.

In this study, two phenotypic methods were used for the detection of MBL-producing P.

Iron at 50 microM concentration supported the maximum growth, heterocyst frequency, CO2 fixation, photosystem I (PS I), photosystem II (PS II) and nitrogenase activities in the organism. Higher concentration of iron inhibited these processes.

N(2) fixation and oxygenic photosynthesis, was studied in the cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum grown diazotrophically. An increase in NaCl concentration suppressed the formation of heterocyst and adversely affected the nitrogenase activity in the parent, whereas in Li(+)-R and Na(+)-R mutants NaCl stress did not cause any adverse effect.

Entrapment of cyanobacterial cells in polyvinyl foam always maintained a higher Ca2+ profile over freely suspended cells. Also, the intracellular Ca2+ concentration was three times more in the former under similar experimental conditions.
