Article Synopsis
  • Rising obesity rates have led to an increase in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) among younger populations, prompting a study comparing metabolically healthy obese and overweight (MHOO) individuals to their non-obese counterparts (MHnOO).
  • Data analysis from the National Inpatient Sample between 2016 and 2019 assessed nearly 48,000 young AIS patients, revealing a slight increase in AIS incidence primarily among MHnOO, with lower in-hospital mortality rates for MHOO patients.
  • The findings suggest that obesity or overweight status does not correlate with heightened risk of AIS hospitalization, indicating an "obesity paradox" where the MHOO group displayed significantly lower odds of all-cause in-hospital mortality compared to MHnOO individuals.

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are routinely administered antibiotics that have demonstrated an increased propensity to cause major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). We conducted a systematic review aimed to investigate the association between FQ usage and the risk of MACE. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library from inception to September 2023 to retrieve studies comparing FQ administration with placebo and reporting the occurrence of MACE.

Commonly recommended drugs for adults and children include proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), proven effective for treating peptic diseases like stomach ulcers, GERD, and Helicobacter pylori infections in children over 1-year-old. Yet, prolonged PPI use carries higher risks of adverse reactions, prompting this study's analysis. We have performed a systematic review of 30 articles, which include a total of 762 505 pediatric patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Neuralgia is chronic pain caused by damage to the nervous system, and current treatments for neuropathic pain often have limited effectiveness and side effects.
  • Botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) has been used since 1989 to treat this type of pain by blocking neurotransmitters involved in pain signaling.
  • A review of 30 studies suggests that BTX-A may be a promising treatment for various types of neuralgia, though more research is needed to understand its best applications and limitations.

Heart failure remains a leading cause of hospitalization and death, and presents a significant challenge for healthcare providers despite the advancements in its management. This umbrella review aimed to pool the results of meta-analyses on the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors in the treatment of heart failure patients. A literature search was done on five databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Global Index Medicus, and Science Direct for articles with full texts available online.

Blunt aortic injury is the second most prevalent cause of patient fatalities post-trauma, closely following head injuries as the leading cause. In recent years, thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has evidently improved survival rates and reduced complications in patients suffering from blunt traumatic aortic injury (BTAI) in comparison to open surgery and non-operative management. It is difficult to characterize the appropriate criteria for the timing of TEVAR, whether early or delayed for BTAI, considering the discrepancies related to timing.
