Stress-Resilience Impacts Psychological Wellbeing: Evidence from Brain-Gut Microbiome Interactions.

The brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) system plays an influential role on mental health. We characterized BGM patterns related to resilience using fecal samples and multimodal MRI. Data integration analysis using latent components showed the high resilience phenotype was associated with lower depression and anxiety symptoms, higher frequency of bacterial transcriptomes (related to environmental adaptation, genetic propagation, energy metabolism, anti-inflammation), increased metabolites (N-acetylglutamate; dimethylglycine), and cortical signatures (increased resting state functional connectivity between reward circuits and sensorimotor networks; decreased grey matter volume and white matter tracts within the emotion regulation network).

Nonunion of an Isolated Medial Condyle of a Femur Hoffa Fracture in a 21-Year-Old Male: A Case Report.

Isolated Hoffa fractures of the femur are often missed on initial radiographic evaluations. Routine CT scans for intraarticular fractures in suburban populations are not routinely done. Nonunion of medial condyle Hoffa fracture of the distal femur is a rare finding and presents late with pain in weight-bearing and painful flexion.

Limb Salvage Strategy Amendment for a Better Future in the Era of Bone Cancer Therapy: A Cross-Sectional Study in North India.

Background:  Bone tumors remain a formidable challenge for orthopedic surgeons. In developing countries, the challenge is exacerbated by limited diagnostic, therapeutic, and management facilities and ignorance. Patients with upper and lower-extremity muscle and skeletal tumors are candidates for amputation or surgical rescue of the limbs.

Local Versus Systemic Tranexamic Acid in Total Hip Arthroplasty in Young Adults.

Background Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the most successful orthopedic elective surgical procedure for end-stage hip arthritis. THA is linked with significant blood loss, ranging from 1,188 to 1,651 mL, and a transfusion rate of 16-37%, which frequently results in postoperative blood transfusions. Postoperative blood transfusions can be avoided by using autologous blood transfusion, intraoperative blood saving, local anesthetic, hypotensive anesthesia, and antifibrinolytic medications such as tranexamic acid (TXA) administration.

RADHunters: gamification in radiology perceptual education.

Purpose: Gamification is used in several fields as an adjunct to standard educational methods but has found limited application in radiology to date. Gamification may be useful for teaching radiology skills typically acquired through experience, such as perceptual skills. The goal of our study is to use a gamified radiology workstation to teach skills related to identification of pulmonary nodules and evaluate for changes in trainee performance.

Glycation alters the mechanical behavior of kidney extracellular matrix.

The mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM) are important in maintaining normal physiological function, and changes in ECM mechanics drive disease. The biochemical structure of the ECM is modified with aging and in diseases such as diabetes. One mechanism of ECM modification is the non-enzymatic reaction between sugars and ECM proteins resulting in formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Effectiveness of four ultrasonographic parameters as predictors of difficult intubation in patients without anticipated difficult airway.

Background: Predicting difficult intubation (DI) is a key challenge, as no single clinical predictor is sufficiently valid to predict the outcome. We evaluated the effectiveness of four upper airway ultrasonographic parameters in predicting DI. The validity of the models using combinations of ultrasonography-based parameters was also investigated.

Coxsackie Myocarditis with Severe Methicillin-resistant Sepsis, Multi-organ Dysfunction Syndrome, and Posterior Epidural Spinal Abscess: A Case Report.

Aim: The aim of this paper is to present an interesting case of viral myocarditis complicated by sepsis, its sequelae, including multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, and the approach to manage it successfully.

Background: Viral myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of myocardium, often leading to residual heart disease. Commonly, dengue and Coxsackie B viruses are the causative agents.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter migration in a patient with breast implants resulting in a peri-implant cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst.

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts complications are most often divided into 2 broad categories: mechanical failure and infection. We report a case of a migrated VP shunt with subsequent development of a pseudocyst around the patient's breast implant, a rare complication. We review the literature of VP shunt complications, including the increasing number of reported breast-related complications, and discuss proposed mechanisms by which migration may occur.

Delivery and tracking of quantum dot peptide bioconjugates in an intact developing avian brain.

Luminescent semiconductor ∼9.5 nm nanoparticles (quantum dots: QDs) have intrinsic physiochemical and optical properties which enable us to begin to understand the mechanisms of nanoparticle mediated chemical/drug delivery. Here, we demonstrate the ability of CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs surface functionalized with a zwitterionic compact ligand to deliver a cell-penetrating lipopeptide to the developing chick embryo brain without any apparent toxicity.
