The mechanisms underlying the mammalian ultradian sleep rhythm-the alternation of rapid-eye-movement (REM) and slow-wave (SW) states-are not well understood but probably depend, at least in part, on circuits in the brainstem. Here, we use perturbation experiments to probe this ultradian rhythm in sleeping lizards (Pogona vitticeps) and test the hypothesis that it originates in a central pattern generator-circuits that are typically susceptible to phase-dependent reset and entrainment by external stimuli. Using light pulses, we find that Pogona's ultradian rhythm can be reset in a phase-dependent manner, with a critical transition from phase delay to phase advance in the middle of SW.

The CA1 region of the hippocampus is one of the most studied regions of the rodent brain, thought to play an important role in cognitive functions such as memory and spatial navigation. Despite a wealth of experimental data on its structure and function, it has been challenging to integrate information obtained from diverse experimental approaches. To address this challenge, we present a community-based, full-scale in silico model of the rat CA1 that integrates a broad range of experimental data, from synapse to network, including the reconstruction of its principal afferents, the Schaffer collaterals, and a model of the effects that acetylcholine has on the system.

To assess the effects of the acute inflammatory response (AIR) induced by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on plasma and tissue disposition of florfenicol (FFC) and its metabolite florfenicol amine (FFC-a), after its intramuscular (IM) administration, twenty-two New Zealand rabbits were randomly distributed in two experimental groups: Group 1 (LPS) was treated with three intravenous doses of 2 μg LPS/kg bw, before an intramuscular dose of 20 mg/kg FFC twenty-four h after the first LPS or SS injection; Group 2 (Control) was treated with saline solution (SS) in equivalent volumes as LPS-treated group. Blood samples were collected before (T0) and at different times after FFC administration. Acute inflammatory response was assessed in a parallel study where significant increases in body temperature, C-reactive protein concentrations and leukopenia were observed in the group treated with LPS.

A method is presented for scaling up the production of flakes of van der Waals materials via mechanical exfoliation. Using a roll-to-roll setup and an automatized, massive parallel exfoliation process, adhesive tapes with a high density of nanosheets of van der Waals materials are produced. The technique allows for obtaining a good trade-off between large lateral size and excellent area scalability, while also maintaining low cost.

Small extracellular vesicles are nanosized vesicles (30-200 nm) that can ferry proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids between cells and therefore, have significant potential as biomarkers, drug delivery tools or therapeutic agents. SEVs of endothelial origin have been shown to -among other functions-reduce ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in cardiomyocytes, but whether a pro-inflammatory state of the endothelium impairs the functionality of these SEVs remains to be elucidated. Our understanding of the functions and mechanisms of sleep remains incomplete, reflecting their increasingly evident complexity. Likewise, studies of interhemispheric coordination during sleep are often hard to connect precisely to known sleep circuits and mechanisms. Here, by recording from the claustra of sleeping bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), we show that, although the onsets and offsets of Pogona rapid-eye-movement (REM) and slow-wave sleep are coordinated bilaterally, these two sleep states differ markedly in their inter-claustral coordination.

Obesity-induced neuroinflammation is a chronic aseptic central nervous system inflammation that presents systemic characteristics associated with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin 18 (IL-18) and the presence of microglia and reactive astrogliosis as well as the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The obesity pandemic is associated with lifestyle changes, including an excessive intake of obesogenic foods and decreased physical activity. Brain areas such as the lateral hypothalamus (LH), lateral septum (LS), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) have been implicated in the homeostatic and hedonic control of feeding in experimental models of diet-induced obesity.
