Background: Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in profound loss of life among older adults living in long-term care (LTC) homes. As a pandemic response, LTC homes enforced infection control processes, including isolating older adults in their rooms, canceling therapeutic programs, and restricting family member visits. Social isolation negatively impacts older adults in LTC, which may result in increased rates of anxiety, depression, physical and cognitive decline, disorientation, fear, apathy, and premature death.

Background And Objectives: Government-mandated health and safety restrictions to mitigate the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) intensified challenges in caring for older adults in long-term care (LTC) without family/care partners. We study the dynamics of black holes in scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories that exhibit spontaneous black hole scalarization using recently introduced methods for solving the full, nonperturbative equations of motion. For one sign of the coupling parameter, nonspinning vacuum black holes are unstable to developing scalar hair, while for the other, instability only sets in for black holes with sufficiently large spin. We study scalarization in both cases, demonstrating that there is a range of parameter space where the theory maintains hyperbolic evolution and for which the instability saturates in a scalarized black hole that is stable without symmetry assumptions.

Glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β is a multifunctional protein that has been implicated in the pathological characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including the heightened levels of neurofibrillary tangles, amyloid-beta (Aβ), and neurodegeneration. A wide variety of operational issues were encountered with the planning and implementation of an adaptive, dose-finding, seamless phase 2/3 trial for a diabetes therapeutic. Compared with a conventional design, significant upfront planning was required, as well as earlier, more integrated cross-functional coordination. Vascular corrosion casts of Syngnathus floridae and Syngnathus fuscus brood pouches were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Morphological and quantitative data on the vasculature of the paternal brood pouch during each stage of embryonic development were investigated to explore potential changes during brooding, to consider interspecific differences and to provide structural evidence for previously reported functional roles of the brood pouch. The brood pouches of both species are highly vascularized structures with cup-like arrangements of brood-pouch vasculature developing around each embryo shortly after fertilization and breaking down before fry release.

Seahorses, sea dragons and pipefishes of the teleost family Syngnathidae are unique in that embryos develop within specialized brooding structures of the male. We enriched brooding Syngnathus fuscus and Syngnathus floridae males with injections of L-lysine-[(15)N(2)] and 16:0-palmitic acid 1-[(13)C] to demonstrate embryonic uptake of paternally-derived nutrients. While all embryos demonstrated amino acid enrichment, late stages showed significantly higher [(15)N], indicating greater utilization of paternal resources as yolk reserves diminished and embryonic energy demands increased.

Many patients who are eligible for Medicare also are eligible for Medicaid. IDSs that deliver care to these patients, called "dual eligibles," face a challenge of conflicting rules and incentives under existing Federal and state laws governing coverage of these patients. In this study the immunogenicity of recombinant nucleoprotein (Np) administered intranasally or intraperitoneally, and its ability to support a systemic protective anti-virus antibody response was examined, in a mouse model of measles virus (MV)-induced encephalitis. Although both intranasal and intraperitoneal routes of immunisation resulted in priming Np- and MV-specific T-cell responses, the intraperitoneal route was shown to prime for a predominantly IgG2a serum anti-MV antibody response of high avidity, which confered complete protection following intracranial challenge with a neuroadapted strain of MV. On the other hand, intranasal priming resulted in a mixed IgG1, IgG2a serum anti-MV antibody response of low avidity, and only 43% of immunised mice survived following intracranial challenge with the neuroadapted strain of MV.
