Prasiola is a genus of foliose green algae that forms extensive cryptogamic canopies that contribute to the greening of ice-free areas in the Antarctic tundra. To better understand the impact of Prasiola canopy establishment on colonization in these areas, this study compared the taxonomic and functional structures of bacterial and fungal communities in adjacent soils with and without extensive Prasiola colonization. DNA metabarcoding was employed to analyze the microbial community structure in these soils and in the canopy.

The rise of cellular immunotherapy for cancer treatment has led to the utilization of immune oncology cocultures to simulate T cell interactions with cancer cells for assessing their antitumor response. Previously, we developed BEHAV3D, a three-dimensional live imaging platform of patient-derived tumor organoid (PDO) and engineered T cell cocultures, that analyzes T cells' dynamics to gain crucial insights into their behavior during tumor targeting. However, live imaging alone cannot determine the molecular drivers behind these behaviors.

Antarctica harbors many distinctive features of life, yet much about the diversity and functioning of Antarctica's life remains unknown. Evolutionary histories and functional ecology are well understood only for vertebrates, whereas research on invertebrates is largely limited to species descriptions and some studies on environmental tolerances. Knowledge on Antarctic vegetation cover showcases the challenges of characterizing population trends for most groups.

Increased expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) by myeloid lineage cells strongly increases the immune activity of these cells, as observed in ACE10/10 mice, which exhibit a marked increase in antitumor and antibactericidal immunity. We report that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), a transcription factor that regulates genes critical for lipid metabolism, is a key molecule in the enhanced macrophage function induced by ACE. Here, we used a Cre-LoxP approach with LysM-Cre to create a modified ACE10/10 mouse line in which macrophages continue to generate abundant ACE but in which monocyte and macrophage PPARα expression is selectively suppressed.

Pro-inflammatory macrophage activation is a hallmark example of how mitochondria serve as signaling organelles. Oxidative phosphorylation sharply decreases upon classical macrophage activation, as mitochondria are thought to shift from ATP production towards accumulating signals that amplify effector function. However, evidence is conflicting regarding whether this collapse in respiration is essential or dispensable.

Burgers have become a staple of global cuisine and can have several different versions and combinations. For example, hybrid burgers have a percentage of animal protein in their formulation, while plant-based burgers contain 100% plant-based proteins. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the emerging trends and challenges in the formulation of hybrid and plant-based burgers, with an emphasis on new ingredients and the evaluation of their physical, chemical, and sensory properties.

Among the plethora of techniques that conforms the Field-Flow Fractionation (FFF) family, electrical field-flow fractionation (ElFFF) was designed to separate different analytes based on their size and electrophoretic mobility (µ). However, major technical and operational issues made this technique to fall into oblivion. Many of those drawbacks can be circumvented if another field is employed as the main driving force for the elution in the same channel, such as the most successful and useful FFF-related technique, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4).

The interplay of RNA modifications - deposited by "writers", removed by "erasers" and identified by RNA binding proteins known as "readers" - forms the basis of the epitranscriptomic gene regulation hypothesis. Recent studies have identified the oncofetal RNA-binding protein IGF2BP3 as a "reader" of the N6-methyladenosine (mA) modification and crucial for regulating gene expression. Yet, how its function as a reader overlaps with its critical oncogenic function in leukemia remains an open question.
