Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) modulates quadriceps motor cortex inhibition and facilitation during rehabilitation following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction: a triple-blind, randomised controlled proof of concept trial.

Objectives: Following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), maladaptive changes occur in the motor cortex representation of the quadriceps, evidenced by increases in intracortical inhibition and facilitation. The primary objective of this proof-of-concept study was to determine if anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can alter quadriceps intracortical inhibition and facilitation in an early-ACLR population after 6 weeks of application during exercise.

Methods: We performed a randomised, triple-blind controlled trial for proof of concept comparing anodal-tDCS to sham-tDCS following ACLR.

Drop deformation in a planar elongational flow: impact of surfactant dynamics.

Drops in extensional flow undergo a deformation, which is primarily fixed by a balance between their surface tension and the viscous stress. This deformation, predicted and measured by Taylor on millimetric drops, is expected to be affected by the presence of surfactants but has never been measured systematically. We provide a controlled experiment allowing us to measure this deformation as a function of the drop size and of the shear stress for different surfactants at varying concentrations.

A 7-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia in people with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome: evaluation of structural validity, hypothesis testing, internal consistency and minimally important change.

Background: The 17-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) is a commonly used patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to assess kinesiophobia, but the measurement properties of the TSK in people with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) are unknown.

Objectives: 1) Revise the existing TSK by removing items, as needed, with inadequate functioning to optimise the TSK for people with FAIS, and 2) evaluate construct validity (both structural validity and hypothesis testing), internal consistency, and minimal important change.

Methods: Cross-sectional cohort study including 153 young adults with FAIS.

Hydrodynamic thinning of a coating film induced by a small solid defect: evidence of a time-minimum thickness.

During coating processes, dust deposition can lead to an uneven thickness in the resulting film, posing significant problems in industrial processes. Our study explores the effects of solid defects using a vertical cylindrical fiber deposited on a silicone oil film coating a horizontal solid substrate. We use a hyperspectral camera to measure the film thickness by interferometry in the vicinity of the defect.

ICON 2023: International Scientific Tendinopathy Symposium Consensus - the core outcome set for Achilles tendinopathy (COS-AT) using a systematic review and a Delphi study of professional participants and patients.

To develop a core outcome set for Achilles tendinopathy (COS-AT) for use in clinical trials we performed a five-step process including (1) a systematic review of available outcome measurement instruments, (2) an online survey on truth and feasibility of the available measurement instruments, (3) an assessment of the methodological quality of the selected outcome measurement instruments, (4) an online survey on the outcome measurement instruments as COS and (5) a consensus in-person meeting. Both surveys were completed by healthcare professionals and patients. The Outcome Measures in Rheumatology guidelines with a 70% threshold for consensus were followed.

Positronium is abundantly produced within the molecular voids of a patient's body during positron emission tomography (PET). Its properties dynamically respond to the submolecular architecture of the tissue and the partial pressure of oxygen. Current PET systems record only two annihilation photons and cannot provide information about the positronium lifetime.

Matrix Viscoelasticity Decouples Bubble Growth and Mobility in Coarsening Foams.

Pressure-driven coarsening triggers bubble rearrangements in liquid foams. Our experiments show that changing the continuous phase rheology can alter these internal bubble dynamics without influencing the coarsening kinetics. Through bubble tracking, we find that increasing the matrix yield stress permits bubble growth without stress relaxation via neighbor-switching events, promoting more spatially homogeneous rearrangements and decoupling bubble growth from mobility.

Anomalous relaxation of coarsening foams with viscoelastic continuous phases.

We investigate the ultraslow structural relaxation of ageing foams with rheologically tunable continuous phases. We probe the bubble dynamics associated with pressure-driven foam coarsening using differential dynamic microscopy, which allows characterising the sample dynamics in reciprocal space with imaging experiments. Similar to other out-of-equilibrium jammed soft systems, these foams exhibit compressed exponential relaxations, with a ballistic-like linear dependency of the relaxation rate on the scattering wavevector.

Foams coarsen because of pressure differences between bubbles of different sizes. We study the coarsening of quasi-2D foams made from model yield stress fluids: concentrated oil-in-water emulsions. We show that increasing the yield stress of the foamed emulsion continuous phase leads to both slower coarsening and irreversible structural change.

Total neoadjuvant therapy with mFOLFIRINOX versus preoperative chemoradiotherapy in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer: long-term results of the UNICANCER-PRODIGE 23 trial.

Background: The standard of care for the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) results in an excellent local disease control but the metastasis rates remain high. PRODIGE 23 demonstrated improved disease-free survival (DFS) and metastasis-free survival (MFS) with total neoadjuvant therapy versus standard of care in this population. Long-term analysis of overall survival (OS) is reported here.

The relationship between sustained hamstring pain and reorganisation of somatosensory representations: a randomised, controlled study.

Recurrent hamstring injuries are highly prevalent amongst sporting populations. It has been hypothesised that pain from an initial hamstring injury may induce reorganisation of somatosensory representations that could contribute to reinjury. However, because of the cross-sectional nature of existing research, it remains unknown whether somatosensory changes are a cause or effect of pain or if they are driven by other potentially confounding factors.

Kidney transplantation after pelvic radiotherapy: Increased morbidity?

Introduction: The impact of pelvic irradiation on kidney transplant surgery is still unclear. The main objective of our study is to evaluate the feasibility and the safety of renal transplantation following pelvic radiotherapy.

Methods: We collected characteristics and kidney transplant data from patients with a history of pelvic cancer treated with pelvic irradiation between 2005 and 2021.

Rehabilitative practice is often criticised for being non-individualised, monotonous and not well aligned with foundational principles that drive continued physiological adaptation(s). Salvage prostate intensity modulated radiation therapy after cryotherapy failure.

Cryotherapy is an ablative therapy that can be used to treat localized prostate cancer. In case of recurrence, treatment options are not well-defined, and their outcomes are unknown. Lifetime of vertical giant soap films: role of the relative humidity and film dimensions.

We consider the lifetime of rectangular vertical soap films and we explore the influence of relative humidity and both dimensions on the stability of large soap films, reaching heights of up to 1.2 m. Using an automated rupture detection system, we achieve a robust statistical measurement of their lifetimes and we also measure the film thinning dynamics.
