Lifestyle Medicine and Vasomotor Symptoms: An Analytic Review.

This paper is an literature evaluation of the treatments based on the 6 pillars of Lifestyle Medicine (nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, positive social connection, and avoidance of risky substances) to improve vasomotor symptoms. Main findings were: (1) the Mediterranean diet and other plant-forward approaches may effectively reduce vasomotor symptoms; (2) stress can directly impact menopausal symptoms by increasing the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and other symptoms; (3) the incidence of sleep disturbances are high during the menopause transition; (4) evidence on the impact of physical activity and exercise on vasomotor symptoms is mixed, although moderate activity and strength training may be better for vasomotor symptom optimization than vigorous exercise and part of a healthy aging process; (5) evidence on the impact of social support on VMS is mixed with some studies suggesting benefit; and (6) evidence on the impact of risky substances is mixed but appears stronger for the effects of tobacco cessation than for alcohol cessation. In summary, while there is a variety of quality of evidence depending on the pillar, lifestyle medicine may be generally considered to improve vasomotor symptoms for patients that cannot use or decline hormone therapy.

Sense of loneliness and meaning in life in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Preliminary studies.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) interferes with everyday functioning but its impact on the loneliness and the meaning in life of the patients is unclear.

Objectives: to determine whether the COPD severity levels correlate with the sense of loneliness and dimensions of the sense of meaning in life.

Methods: 144 patients with COPD during a period of absence of an infectious exacerbation were examined.

Decent and Precarious Work Among Nursing and Care Workers: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review.

Aim: To identify and describe evidence from original studies on the contextual factors, dimensions, and outcomes of decent and precarious work among nursing and care workers.

Design: This is a mixed-methods systematic review.

Data Sources: The Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and SocINDEX databases were searched on January 11, 2024.

A patient-centered approach to dietary supplements for patients with chronic liver disease.

The use of dietary supplements by patients with chronic liver disease is prevalent and rising. Despite the known risks of dietary supplements, including hepatotoxicity, adulteration, and contamination, patients with chronic liver disease often turn to dietary supplements to support their liver and/or overall health but are not necessarily empowered with the information or guidance from their liver practitioner to do so. This article provides practitioners with a framework for balancing the risks and benefits of dietary supplements in patients with chronic liver disease, offering examples of independent resources and certifications to use this framework in clinical practice.

Proposed Nutrition Competencies for Medical Students and Physician Trainees: A Consensus Statement.

Importance: In 2022, the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution (House of Representatives Resolution 1118 at the 117th Congress [2021-2022]) calling for meaningful nutrition education for medical trainees. This was prompted by increasing health care spending attributed to the growing prevalence of nutrition-related diseases and the substantial federal funding via Medicare that supports graduate medical education. In March 2023, medical education professional organizations agreed to identify nutrition competencies for medical education.

Objective: The overall aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential benefit of a novel mixed-reality-head-mounted display (MR-HMD) on the spatial orientation of surgeons.

Methods: In a prospective clinical investigation, the authors applied for the first time a new multicamera navigation technology in an operating room setting that allowed them to directly compare MR-HMD navigation to standard monitor navigation. In the study, which included 14 patients with nonruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysms, the authors investigated how intuitively and effectively surgical instruments could be guided in 5 different visual navigation conditions.

The impact of depressive and anxious symptoms on quality of life in adults on the autism spectrum.

Quality of life (QoL) is lower in adults on the autism spectrum (AS) compared with typically developing (TD) adults. In this context, recent studies have examined the role of depression and anxiety in reducing QoL in AS adults. The aim of this study was to (1) replicate these findings of lower QoL and (2) assess the negative influence of depressive and anxious symptoms on QoL in an adult AS (N = 86) and TD (N = 87) German sample with a broad age range (18-70 years).

The 23rd Annual Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Virology Association.

Located 50 miles west of Fort Collins, Colorado, Colorado State University's Mountain Campus in Pingree Park hosted the 23rd annual Rocky Mountain Virology Association meeting in 2023 with 116 participants. Acupuncture after valve surgery is feasible and shows promise in reducing postoperative atrial fibrillation: The ACU-Heart pilot trial.

Objective: Acupuncture is an effective treatment for arrythmias and postoperative symptoms but has not been investigated after cardiac surgery. Acupuncture After Heart Surgery is a prospective, randomized, controlled pilot trial of daily inpatient acupuncture or standard care after valve surgery with the primary end point being feasibility and secondary end points being reduction in postoperative atrial fibrillation incidence and postoperative symptoms.

Methods: A total of 100 patients without a history of atrial fibrillation underwent primary valve surgery via sternotomy and randomized 1:1 to acupuncture (51) or standard care (49).

Introduction: The COVID-19 epidemic has provided opportunity to study the impact of a well-defined severe illness on the development of a depressive episode and the associated sense of loneliness and lack of meaning in life.

Materials And Methods: The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of a reactive depressive episode, the severity of depression, a sense of loneliness and meaning in life in subjects who approximately a year earlier than the date of the study had suffered from a pulmonary form of SARS-CoV-2 infection with radiologically documented interstitial lesions of the lungs, requiring and not requiring hospitalization compared to people who did not develop the disease as a result of infection with that virus. In the domain of nutrition, food, and health, these principles are particularly vital, as diet and food choices are strongly linked to cultural identities and socioeconomic conditions. Despite a growth of DEIB initiatives in undergraduate and graduate medical education, there is a significant gap regarding guidelines for implementing DEIB principles in education around nutrition and food, including that for dietitians, allied health and medical professionals.
