Patients who participate in recreational injection drug use (RIVDU) have an increased risk of orthopaedic infections requiring prolonged treatment with intravenous antibiotics. This study reviews clinical outcomes and complications in RIVDU and have orthopaedic infections requiring long term antibiotic therapy (>4 weeks) and compares these outcomes to non-RIVDU patients. In this retrospective review, patients were divided into cohorts based on RIVDU history; the RIVDU cohort was further divided into subcohorts based on treatment location.

Toward the finalization of this nutritionally enhanced sorghum for food production, confined field trials were conducted to determine the agronomic performance of thirteen independent transgenic events in Iowa and Hawaii. Through these trials, three leading events with no negative impact on agronomic performance were identified.

While alexithymia is related to psychopathology in general, it has been associated with increased reporting of medically unexplained symptoms and depression in particular. This study attempts to assess the extent to which alexithymia represents a learned, avoidant coping strategy against unwanted emotions.

Previous research has documented that ethnic minorities, particularly Latinos, obtain fewer mental health services than Caucasians (Kearney, Draper, & Baron 2005; Sue, Fujino, Hu, Takeuchi, & Zane, 1991). Conceivably, this may be due to a wide array of cultural issues (e.g.

Such compounds now have a relevant role in contemporary models of combination with targeted agents, thus providing a rationale to consider nature as a valid tool to discover new innovative anticancer agents. The marine ecosystem has increasingly been the focus of interest for new discoveries in the field that are expected to be of significant therapeutic impact in cancer patients.

The HEMOCHRON RxDx system (International Technidyne Corp, Edison, NJ) is widely used for anticoagulation management. Based on a series of consecutive in vitro tests, the RxDx system is used to quantify the patient's heparin requirement (heparin response test, HRT), measure the activated clotting time (ACT), calculate the blood heparin concentration and the required protamine dose (protamine response test, PRT), as well as determine the efficacy of heparin reversal (protamine dose assay, PDA-O).

The results from these reactions agree with the structure originally proposed by Hamann and Scheuer and with the same stereochemistry of most of the component amino acids more recently proposed by Goetz, Yoshida, and Scheuer. However, our assignments of d-Val(3) and l-Val(4) are the reverse of previous assignments made as l-Val(3) and d-Val(4).

Hepatotoxicity was the most prominent toxicity in preclinical studies and was greater in female rats than in male rats. To assess the potential implications for human toxicities, the in vitro metabolism of ET743 was characterized using rat and human preparations.

The major microcystins were further analysed by collisionally induced tandem electrospray ionization MS.

An outbreak of acute liver failure occurred at a dialysis center in Caruaru, Brazil (8 degrees 17' S, 35 degrees 58' W), 134 km from Recife, the state capital of Pernambuco. At the clinic, 116 (89%) of 131 patients experienced visual disturbances, nausea, and vomiting after routine hemodialysis treatment on 13-20 February 1996. Subsequently, 100 patients developed acute liver failure, and of these 76 died.

Construction of the target molecule was achieved in 13 steps with an overall yield of 40%. The work is highlighted by a novel one-pot transformation from isoxazolidin-5-one intermediate 6 to the final product, a step that can also be used to form beta-amino acids.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFElectrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to develop a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method for determination and identification of hepatotoxic microcystins, cyanobacterial cyclic heptapeptides. To optimize the electrospray ionization conditions, factors affecting charge state distribution, such as amino acid components of sample, proton affinity of the additives, and additive concentration, were investigated in detail and a method for controlling charge states was developed to provide molecular-related ions for assignment of molecular weight and reasonably abundant precursor ions for MS/MS analysis. A procedure for identification of microcystins consisting of known amino acids was proposed: for microcystins giving abundant [M + 2H]2+ ions, the addition of nitrogen-containing bases to the aqueous sample solution is effective to obtain an increased intensity of [M + H]+ ions, whereas the addition of Lewis acids containing nitrogen can produce increased abundances of [M + 2H]2+ ions for microcystins giving weak [M + 2H]2+ ions.

Cnidarians are the lowest animal group having a nervous system. Using a radioimmunoassay for the C-terminal sequence Arg-Phe-NH2 (RFamide), we have isolated three novel neuropeptides from the jellyfish Cyanea lamarckii (belonging to the class Scyphozoa): (Glu-Trp-Leu-Arg-Gly-Arg-Phe-NH2 (Cyanea-RFamide I), (Glu-Pro-Leu-Trp-Ser-Gly-Arg-Phe-NH2 (Cyanea-RFamide II) and Gly-Arg-Phe-NH2 (Cyanea-RFamide III). The Cyanea-RFamides are neuropeptides and form a peptide family with other known neuropeptides isolated from Hydra and hydromedusae (belonging to the class Hydrozoa), and various sea anemones and sea pansies (belonging to the class Anthozoa).
