Article Synopsis
  • Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, despite their promise for regenerative medicine, have tumorigenic properties, necessitating the selective elimination of malignant cells during product manufacturing.* -
  • In the study, hybrid liposomes (HL) were used to selectively target and eliminate human hepatocellular carcinoma (HuH-7) cells from a mixed culture with normal human fetal hepatocytes (Hc cells), preserving the viability of Hc cells.* -
  • The findings indicate that HL can effectively suppress the tumorigenicity of HuH-7 cells, showing potential for improving the safety of regenerative medicine products by keeping normal cells unharmed.*

To avoid the risk of tumorigenesis after cell transplantation, tumorigenic stem cells should be selectively eliminated from induced pluripotent cells, embryonic stem cells, and somatic stem cells. We previously reported the presence of tumorigenic stem cells in human fetal hepatocyte-induced hepatoblasts after sodium butyrate (SB) treatment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the selective elimination of tumorigenic stem cells in human hepatoblasts using hybrid liposomes (HLs) prepared by sonicating a mixture of 90 mol% l-α-dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine and 10 mol% polyoxyethylene (n) dodecyl ether (C (EO), n = 23) in a buffer solution.
