A 69-year-old woman suffering with multiple myeloma developed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Shortly after administration of remdesivir, she presented with symptoms of facial flushing, wheezing, and hypoxemia. Subsequently, thrombocytopenia and hypofibrinogenemia rapidly manifested, leading to a diagnosis of enhanced fibrinolytic-type disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC).

Sarocladium kiliense is ubiquitous in the human environment and is an emerging opportunistic pathogen, especially among immunocompromised hosts. A 77-year-old man diagnosed with aplastic anemia suffered from non-valvular endocarditis. After he passed away, fungal hyphae were observed in several lesions on a postmortem examination.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare disease characterized by the accumulation of eosinophilic periodic acid Schiff-positive material in the intra-alveolar and bronchiolar spaces. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including imatinib, nilotinib, and dasatinib, have shown excellent efficacy in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We report a case of acquired PAP in a patient with CML receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) is an aggressive disease, incurable by standard chemotherapy. NK314, a new anticancer agent possessing inhibitory activity specific for topoisomerase IIα (Top2α), inhibited the growth of various ATL cell lines (50% inhibitory concentration: 23-70nM) with more potent activity than that of etoposide. In addition to the induction of DNA double-strand breaks by inhibition of Top2α, NK314 induced degradation of the catalytic subunit of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PKcs), resulting in impaired DNA double-strand break repair.

Article Synopsis
  • A 67-year-old Japanese woman with symptoms suggesting acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) underwent a skin biopsy that confirmed the diagnosis and was treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA).
  • Despite initial treatment, her condition worsened with severe side effects, including gangrenous cheilitis (lip necrosis) and high fever, necessitating the discontinuation of ATRA and the use of antibiotics and antifungals.
  • After a switch to arsenic trioxide for re-induction therapy, the patient's APL went into complete remission, and her symptoms gradually improved, highlighting the need for awareness of the rare complications associated with ATRA treatment.

Purpose: Development of an early detection marker is one of the most important strategies for improving overall prognosis in lung cancer patients. We previously reported that hnRNP B1--an RNA binding protein--is overexpressed in lung cancer tissue from the early stage of cancer, and found that hnRNP B1 mRNA is detectable in the plasma of lung cancer patients using real-time RT-PCR. The purpose of this study was to establish a quick and simple method for detecting plasma hnRNP B1mRNA for use in screening for lung cancer.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in lung cancer enhance tyrosine kinase activity and increase sensitivity to the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, gefitinib. Mutation analysis of the EGFR gene is therefore indispensable for predicting gefitinib response. We investigated a CA-repeat polymorphism in the EGFR gene related to EGFR mutations.

A member of the family of p53-related genes, p63 plays a role in regulating epithelial proliferation and differentiation programs, but the pathological and clinical meaning of p63 in B-cell lymphoma has not been elucidated. We investigated the expression pattern of p63 in B-cell malignancies, and evaluated the correlation between the expression of p63 and other germinal center markers. Ninety-eight B-cell lymphomas (28 FCL, 5 MCL, and 65 DLBCL) were analyzed by immunohistochemical examination for p63, bcl-6, CD10 and MUM-1 proteins, and for rearrangement of bcl-2/IgH.

MD-1 and MD-2 are secretory glycoproteins that exist on the cell surface in complexes with transmembrane proteins. MD-1 is anchored by radioprotective 105 (RP105), and MD-2 is associated with TLR4. In vivo studies revealed that MD-1 and MD-2 have roles in responses to LPS.

An 83-year-old man without history of the hemorrhagic diathesis was admitted to our hospital with a 4-months history of purpura and subcutaneous hematoma. He had an extraordinarily prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time, and his factor VIII (F VIII) activity level was 0.2%.
