Background: In the Netherlands, general practitioners (GPs) and community nurses play a central role in the palliative care for home-dwelling patients with advanced cancer and their relatives. To optimize the palliative care provision at home, it is important to have insight in the elements that patients and relatives consider essential for high-quality palliative care, and whether these essentials are present in the actual care they receive.
Methods: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 patients with advanced cancer and 14 relatives.
Background: Identification of endometrial carcinoma (EC) patients at high risk of recurrence is lacking. In this study, the prognostic role of hypoxia and angiogenesis was investigated in EC patients.
Methods: Tumour slides from EC patients were stained by immunofluorescence for carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) as hypoxic marker and CD34 for assessment of microvessel density (MVD).
Objective: Cancer and its treatment often have a profound impact on patients, leading to increased health care use in the years after diagnosis. Social support is an important determinant of health care use. Partners of cancer patients may not always be able to provide all support patients need and patients may then revert to professional health care.

Methods: From the NIVEL Primary Care Database we identified cancer patients with diabetes mellitus (n=629), osteoarthritis (n=425), coronary artery disease (n=466), COPD (n=383) or without a chronic disease (n=1507), diagnosed with cancer between 2002 and 2010.
Aims/hypothesis: A reliable method for in vivo quantification of pancreatic beta cell mass (BCM) could lead to further insight into the pathophysiology of diabetes. The glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor, abundantly expressed on beta cells, may be a suitable target for imaging. We investigated the potential of radiotracer imaging with the GLP-1 analogue exendin labelled with indium-111 for determination of BCM in vivo in a rodent model of beta cell loss and in patients with type 1 diabetes and healthy individuals.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibition using cetuximab improves the efficacy of radiotherapy in only a subgroup of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. Therefore, to improve patient selection a better understanding of tumor characteristics that affect treatment is necessary. Here, we investigated the effect of cetuximab on repair of radiation-induced DNA damage in a HNSCC xenograft model, which shows a synergistic effect to cetuximab and radiotherapy (SCCNij185) and a HNSCC model, which shows no additive effect of cetuximab to radiotherapy (SCCNij153).

Therefore, we investigated whether inhibition of SFK through dasatinib (DSB) can enhance the effect of radiotherapy in two in vivo human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) models. Response to DSB and/or radiotherapy was assessed with tumor growth delay assays in two HNSCC xenograft models, SCCNij153 and SCCNij202.

Material And Methods: 261 Paraffin embedded tumor biopsies and 79 fresh frozen biopsies from patients entered in the trial were immunohistochemically stained for CAIX. CAIX-fraction and CAIX expression pattern were related to tumor control and patient survival.
Glycerophospholipids are the most abundant membrane lipid constituents in most eukaryotic cells. As a consequence, phospholipid class and acyl chain homeostasis are crucial for maintaining optimal physical properties of membranes that in turn are crucial for membrane function. The topic of this review is our current understanding of membrane phospholipid homeostasis in the reference eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

As CA4P acts on dividing endothelial cells, we hypothesize that CA4P affects vessels of certain sizes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of CA4P by the MRI-based vessel size imaging (VSI).

Insight into the reasons for this could help in developing and improving guidelines and planning of health care, which is important given the expected increase in cancer survivors. Using data from the Netherlands Information Network of Primary Care, we selected 1256 adult breast cancer, 503 prostate cancer and 487 colorectal cancer patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2006.

Little is known about the combination and possible interactions between the two phenomena.
Methods And Materials: In this study, 45 cases of histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck were analyzed.
Background: Overexpression of EGFR correlates with decreased survival after radiotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, the contribution of the activated form, pEGFR, and its downstream signaling (PI3-K/AKT) pathway is not clear yet.
Methods: Fifty-eight patients with HNSCC were included in the study.
Background: Automated analysis of immunohistochemically stained tissue sections is of great importance in cancer research to detect tumor-specific prognostic markers and make therapy decisions. Here, an automated quantitative analysis is presented to assess the colocalization of CAIX, a membrane-bound hypoxic marker and Ki-67, a nuclear proliferation marker.
Methods: Tissue sections of 104 biopsies from 89 patients were stained for CAIX and Ki-67 with diaminobenzidine and haematoxylin counterstain.

Background: Community participation has been defined as performing daytime activities by people while interacting with others. Previous studies on community participation among people with intellectual disability (ID) have mainly focused on the domestic life aspect. This study investigates the variation in community participation in the domains work, social contacts and leisure activities among people with ID in the Netherlands.

The present study investigates early changes of the pimonidazole hypoxic fraction of FaDu tumours and the expression and phosphorylation of the EGFR and its downstream signal transduction molecules after treatment with C225 alone or in combination with irradiation.
Material And Methods: FaDu tumour xenografts were irradiated with up to 3×3Gy with or without additional C225 treatment and excised at different time points.
Unlabelled: Hypoxic tumor cells are resistant to radiotherapy and various chemotherapeutic agents. The pretherapeutic assessment of intratumoral hypoxia may allow selection of patients for intensified treatment regimens. Carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) is an endogenous hypoxia-related protein involved in pH regulation and is upregulated in many tumor types.

Two types of murine colon tumors (C26a and C38) were investigated prior to and following administration of USPIO blood-pool contrast agent with fast R(1) measurements. In a subpopulation of mice, R(1) was measured following administration of hydralazine, a well-known blood hemodynamic modifier.

Deletion of the TAZ1 gene, involved in cardiolipin acyl chain remodeling, is known to increase the content of monolyso-cardiolipin (MLCL) at the expense of CL, and to decrease the unsaturation of the remaining CL. Deletion of the ACB1 gene encoding the acyl-CoA-binding protein, involved in fatty acid elongation, decreases the average length of the CL acyl chains.

The present study aims at a better understanding of the way the CL species profile is established in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by using depletion of the acyl-CoA-binding protein Acb1p as a tool to modulate the cellular acyl chain content. Despite the presence of an intact CL remodeling system, acyl chains shorter than 16 carbon atoms (C16) were found to accumulate in CL in cells lacking Acb1p.
