While more and more health-related data is being produced and published every day, few of it is being prepared in a way that would be beneficial for daily use outside the scientific realm. Interactive visualizations that can slice and condense enormous amounts of multi-dimensional data into easy-to-digest portions are a promising tool that has been under-utilized for health-related topics. Here we present two case studies for how interactive maps can be utilized to make raw health data accessible to different target audiences: i) the European Notifiable Diseases Interactive Geovisualization (ENDIG) which aims to communicate the implementation status of disease surveillance systems across the European Union to public health experts and decision makers, and ii) the Zoonotic Infection Risk in Twente-Achterhoek Map (ZIRTA map), which aims to communicate information about zoonotic diseases and their regional occurrence to general practitioners and other healthcare providers tasked with diagnosing infectious diseases on a daily basis.

Introduction: It is unclear whether polyomavirus BK (BKPyV) microribonucleic acid (miRNA) measurement has additional diagnostic and predictive value in kidney transplant recipients (KTR) as compared to current methods of monitoring BKPyV DNA loads.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal study was performed in 30 KTR with BKPyV viruria (n = 10), BKPyV viremia (n = 10), or BKPyV-associated neuropathy (BKPyVAN) (n = 10). Bkv-miR-B1-3p and 5p and BKPyV DNA load were measured in urine and plasma and compared using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 social distancing measures led to a notable drop in non-COVID-19 respiratory virus infections, allowing for an analysis of their effects on lung function in lung transplant recipients (LTRs) between 2009 and 2020.* -
  • Data from 479 LTRs showed a significant difference in annual FEV decline, where it remained stable during social distancing (5 mL) compared to a decline pre-social distancing (-114 mL), with frequent bouts of temporary drops in lung function (TDLF) associated with faster FEV declines.* -
  • The study found lower rates of TDLF and chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) during social distancing, suggesting that reduced respiratory virus circulation

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus (PIV), and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) are increasingly associated with chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) in lung transplant recipients (LTR). This systematic review primarily aimed to assess outcomes of RSV/PIV/hMPV infections in LTR and secondarily to assess evidence regarding the efficacy of ribavirin.

Methods: Relevant databases were queried and study outcomes extracted using a standardized method and summarized.

Pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients often suffer from gastro-intestinal (GI) disease caused by viruses, Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD) or a combination of the two. Currently, the GI eukaryotic virome of HSCT recipients remains relatively understudied, which complicates the understanding of its role in GVHD pathogenicity. As decisions regarding immunosuppressive therapy in the treatment of virus infection or GVHD, respectively, can be completely contradicting, it is crucial to better understand the prevalence and relevance of viruses in the GI tract in the HSCT setting.

Respiratory tract infection with pneumoviruses (PVs) and paramyxoviruses (PMVs) are increasingly associated with chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) in lung transplant recipients (LTRs). Ribavirin may be a treatment option but its effectiveness is unclear, especially with respect to infection severity. We retrospectively analyzed 10 years of PV/PMV infections in LTRs.

Background: Ambulance dispatches could be useful for syndromic surveillance of severe respiratory infections. We evaluated whether ambulance dispatch calls of highest urgency reflect the circulation of influenza A virus, influenza B virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus, adenovirus, coronavirus, parainfluenzavirus and human metapneumovirus (hMPV).

Methods: We analysed calls from four ambulance call centres serving 25% of the population in the Netherlands (2014-2016).

Background: Ribavirin is currently recommended for treating chronic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. This retrospective European multicenter study aimed to assess the sustained virological response (SVR) in a large cohort of solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients with chronic HEV infection treated with ribavirin monotherapy (N = 255), to identify the predictive factors for SVR, and to evaluate the impact of HEV RNA mutations on virological response.

Methods: Data from 255 SOT recipients with chronic HEV infection from 30 European centers were analyzed.

We systematically reviewed available evidence from Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Library on diagnostic accuracy and clinical impact of commercially available rapid (results <3 hours) molecular diagnostics for respiratory viruses as compared to conventional molecular tests. Quality of included studies was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies criteria for diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) studies, and the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment and Risk of Bias in Nonrandomized Studies of Interventions criteria for randomized and observational impact studies, respectively. Sixty-three DTA reports (56 studies) were meta-analyzed with a pooled sensitivity of 90.

Article Synopsis
  • Transplant recipients are highly susceptible to viral infections, specifically human cytomegalovirus (CMV), which can negatively impact kidney health post-transplant.
  • In a study of 264 kidney transplant recipients, those with high early CMV viral loads (PVL > 6310 IU/ml) experienced a significant decline in kidney function over 3 years compared to those with lower viral loads.
  • The findings suggest that it’s the high level of early CMV DNAemia, rather than the presence of the virus itself, that leads to permanent and progressive loss of renal function after transplantation.
