This is the first of a two-part article in which we focus on the Ultrasound (US) appearance of the normal median nerve (MN) and its main branches. The detailed anatomy and US anatomy of the MN course are presented with high-resolution images obtained with the latest-generation US machines and transducers. Variations are discussed to avoid misinterpretation of normal findings.

Material And Methods: The ultrasound database of one of the authors, who has more than 10 years of experience in peripheral nerve ultrasound, was searched for the phrases "UN variant" or "UN loop." The other two authors, with more than 10 years of experience in nerve imaging, retrospectively reviewed the static sonograms as well as the videoclips stored, to confirm the findings.
This is the second part of a two-part article in which we focus on the ultrasound (US) appearance of the pathological ulnar nerve (UN) and its main branches. Findings in a wide range of our pathological cases are presented with high-resolution US images obtained with the latest-generation US machines and transducers.

Aims: To evaluate changes in hemoglobin concentration during a 24-week follow-up of anemic patients with IBD.
Background: Anemia is a common extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with a 6% to 74% prevalence and a negative impact on patient survival and quality of life, although the prevalence is apparently declining due to improved disease treatment. We aimed to investigate the prevalence, pathogenesis, and clinical correlates of anemia in Italian patients with IBD.
Methods: A multicenter, prospective, observational study, involving 28 Italian gastroenterology centers, was conducted to investigate the epidemiology and consequences of IBD-associated anemia.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is increased in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and surveillance needs to be tailored according to individual risk. The open issues include the role of the characteristics of IBD and CRC in determining the long-term outcome. These issues were assessed in our multicenter study, including a cohort of 56 IBD patients with incident CRC.

The present research was aimed to develop a novel genetic method to test lactase non persistence more powerfully.
Methods And Results: In our study, we selected eight different SNPs that are associated with lactase persistence from Caucasian, Arabian Bedouins, sub-Saharian Africans and Asian populations to set up an approach to detect all the eight different SNPs at the same time in the same sample.
We review the ultrasound (US) findings in patients who present with meralgia paresthetica (MP). The anatomy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve at the level where the nerve exits the pelvis and potential entrapment sites that can lead to MP are discussed. A wide range of pathological cases are presented to help in recognizing the US patterns of MP.

A wide range of our pathological cases are reviewed and presented to help in familiarizing the reader with common and uncommon clinical scenarios that affect the RN and its main branches.

The deep peroneal nerve (DPN) is one of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve. The DPN may be affected by various disorders, which may be clinically challenging to show.

Therefore, it is exposed to injury in anterolateral cervical surgery, which can cause neuropathic pain. To provide a method with which to relieve patients' pain, this study aimed to evaluate the possibility of visualization, diagnostic assessment and blockade of the TCN with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS).

Methods: In this prospective study, ultrasound-guided nerve blockades of the IFCN, MFCN, and IPBSN in 14 healthy volunteers were administered. High-frequency probes (15-22 MHz) and 1 ml of 1% lidocaine per nerve were used.
Background: Golimumab is a new anti-TNF-alpha monoclonal antibody for patients with ulcerative colitis.
Aims: To assess the short- and long-term effectiveness and safety of golimumab in daily clinical practice and to identify predictors of response.
Methods: Consecutive patients treated with golimumab in 22 Italian centers were enrolled.
The physiological decline of lactase production in adulthood, in some individuals, is responsible for the so-called "Lactose Intolerance." This clinical syndrome presents with gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal symptoms following the consumption of dairy containing food. Lactose intolerance can be evaluated by means of the Lactose Breath Test (phenotype) and/or genetic evaluation of lactase-gene polymorphism (genotype).

Methods: The following tools were used over 12 months to assess: Results were correlated with demographic and clinical variables with linear regression models.
Results: 552 patients with active CD (51% men) were recruited.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of visualizing Pacinian corpuscles in the palm of the hand with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS). In this prospective study, HRUS with a high-frequency probe (22 MHz) was used. The palms of two fresh cadaveric hands were screened for potential Pacinian corpuscles.

Methods: HRUS with high-frequency probes (15-22 MHz) was used to locate the IPBSN in 14 fresh anatomic specimens at 4 different locations. The correct identification of the IPBSN was verified by ink marking and consecutive dissection.
Purpose: Neuropathy of the intermediate (IFCN) and medial femoral cutaneous nerve (MFCN) is a potential iatrogenic complication of thigh surgery and its diagnosis is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of the visualization and diagnostic assessment of the IFCN and MFCN with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS).
Materials And Methods: In this study, HRUS with high-frequency probes (15 - 22MHz) was used to locate the IFCN and the MFCN in 16 fresh cadaveric lower limbs.
This preliminary study aims to establish the Virtual Chromoendoscopic Magnification (VCM) feasibility to visualize and distinguish the Intraepithelial Papillary Capillary Loops (IPCL) patterns of benign oral pathologies from malignant ones. Thirty-one consecutive subjects affected by oral lesions/pathologies underwent white light examination and VCM imaging by the Narrow Band Imaging System (Olympus Medical Systems Corp., Tokyo, Japan).
