Objectives: To investigate the effect of tranexamic acid (TXA) through in vitro culture of primary human osteoblasts (HOB) and in vivo using an operative rat femur fracture model. It was hypothesized that there would not be any effect on fracture healing in both studies.

Methods: Primary HOBs were exposed to varying concentrations of TXA over different time periods.

Background: The optimal time to initiate venous thromboembolism (VTE) chemoprophylaxis (VTEp) after blunt solid organ injury remains controversial, as VTE mitigation must be balanced against bleeding promulgation. Evidence from primarily small, retrospective, single-center work suggests that VTEp ≤48 hours is safe and effective. This study was undertaken to validate this clinical practice.

Objective: The Centre of Psychiatry Suedwuerttemberg routinely records data on service use of in-patient units, day hospitals and out-patient services on a daily basis as well as data on the respective patients according to the German Basic Documentation (BADO). Other psychiatric services in the catchment area of the districts Ravensburg and Bodenseekreis such as services of sheltered living, residential homes and vocational services collect identical data per day of use. Aim of the study is to compare routinely recorded data of mental health service use and direct cost of service use with sample data.

Background: The regulation of personnel in psychiatry (PsychPV) stipulates time requirements for all relevant activities in inpatient psychiatric care as a function of the degree of disease severity of the patients treated. The demands made on employees in psychiatric care have risen substantially in recent years. Our aim was to examine whether the standard requirements of the PsychPV cover the actual work load.

A three-dimensional model of the left acetabulum with inserted threaded cup has been generated, based on the finite element method, to calculate stress patterns in the standing phase during walking. In this study, a hemispherical cup with sharp threads, a parabolic cup with flat threads and a conical cup with sharp threads were analysed and compared. Stress patterns in both implant components and adjacent bony structures were calculated in a directly postoperative situation.

In three psychiatric hospitals in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, a physician-nurse shared leadership model was implemented in 1997 by the hospital management. The whole hospital, departments, and single wards are led each by a leadership team consisting of a physician, psychologist or social worker and a nurse, being responsible for organization, staff, and budgets. The consequences for staff opinion in leadership positions were evaluated.

During the first few days of Army Basic Combat Training (BCT), recruits take a running test and after completing this test they are ranked from fast to slow. Four roughly equal-sized "ability groups" are established from these rankings and recruits run together in these groups for their physical training during BCT. In the past, there has been no formal guidance regarding how fast or how far these ability groups should run.

Recruits arriving for basic combat training (BCT) between October 1999 and May 2004 were administered an entry-level physical fitness test at the reception station. If they failed the test, then they entered the Fitness Assessment Program (FAP), where they physically trained until they passed the test and subsequently entered BCT. The effectiveness of the FAP was evaluated by examining fitness, injury, and training outcomes.

A control group (CG, n = 1,138) that implemented a traditional Basic Combat Training (BCT) physical training (PT) program was compared to an evaluation group (EG, n = 829) that implemented a PT program newly designed for BCT. The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was taken at various points in the PT program, and injuries were obtained from a medical surveillance system. After 9 weeks of training, the proportion failing the APFT was lower in the EG than in the CG (1.

Dissolved natural organic matter (NOM) is dead organic matter exceeding, in freshwater systems, the concentration of organic carbon in all living organisms by far. 80-90% (w/w) of the NOM is made up of humic substances (HS). Although NOM possesses several functional groups, a potential effect on aquatic organisms has not been studied.

The aim of this article is to present the optimization of a proof test procedure of ceramic hip joint ball heads. The proof test rejects defective samples in the production line before being implanted into human body. Thereby on every ceramic ball head a static load is applied, which is somewhat higher than the maximum physiological load.

The fixation principle of threaded cups ensures high primary stability. Inadequate results with first-generation threaded cups led to modifications of surface machining. 10 threaded cups of the first generation, and 27 of the second and third generations were systematically analysed and their shapes measured using a no-touch light section technique.

Background: Schönlein-Henoch purpura is a systemic vasculitis that affects vessels of a small caliber and rarely reported in the literature.

Case Presentation: We report on a 35-year-old woman who developed palpable purpura with necrotizing cutaneous lesions on the lower limbs at 27 weeks of gestation. She also complained of epigastric pain and arthralgias.

Using finite element analysis we have studied the pelvic bony socket and compared it with radiological imaging using threaded acetabular cups of three different shapes (parabolic, conical, hemispherical). The two-dimensional model depicted a planar section through a left pelvic hemisphere. In all three cups the stress in the bony socket increased from lateral towards medial.

This article discusses the use of osseointegrated implants in mandibular reconstruction. Although the article presents the history, indications, and complications of this technique, the primary focus of the article is the technique itself, especially how the technique varies from patients not undergoing reconstruction to those who are. The effect of radiation therapy on the treatment planning of patients undergoing reconstruction also is discussed.

A resin-bonded retainer with a custom-made attachment is an acceptable alternative for patients who have narrow anterior alveolar ridge defects. This restoration facilitates hygiene and satisfies the requirements of form, fit, function, and esthetics.

The role of the laboratory industry representative is changing. Today, industry representatives must play a much stronger role in providing the products, service, and information that physicians need to run their practices more effectively. They must not only continue to offer high-quality products that are accurate, reliable, and cost-efficient but also provide the product knowledge and services that enable their customers to use those products effectively.

Regional cerebral blood flow was measured during resting baseline and the performance of a verbal and a spatial task in 14 medicated depressives and 25 matched controls. Overall resting flows did not differ, nor were there hemispheric or anteroposterior differences between patients and controls for resting flows. Differences between patients and controls were evident during cognitive activity, and the effects were different for male and female patients.

We measured regional cerebral blood flow during resting baseline and the performance of verbal and spatial tasks in 15 medicated schizophrenics and 25 matched controls. Patients did not differ from controls in resting flows but showed different blood-flow changes during task performance. Controls replicated earlier findings in normal subjects: flow increased during task performance, and the hemispheric increase was greater in the left for the verbal and in the right for the spatial task.

The utility of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in the diagnosis of psychotic depression was examined by comparing the responses of 11 psychotic and 18 nonpsychotic depressed inpatients. Nine of 11 psychotic patients (81.8%) and 10 of 18 nonpsychotic patients (55.
