A bench study was performed to investigate the potential of air bubbles entering a central vein via a central venous catheter to ascend retrograde to the brain. The results support the hypothesis that air bubbles may rise retrograde against the venous blood flow, depending on bubble size, central vein diameter and cardiac output. A review of radiological findings in published case reports indicates that the occurrence of retrograde cerebral air embolism is underestimated.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening disease that occurs mainly in young adults. Acquired cases are usually a result of antibodies directed against ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease [reprolysin type] with thrombospondin type 1 motif 13), a protease that cleaves the von Willebrand factor multimers. Prognosis has been improved by plasma therapy, but some acute severe forms are refractory to this treatment and achieving a sustained remission is still a challenge in chronic relapsing forms.

On the basis of EU directives 89/391/EEC (to encourage improvements in the safety and health of workers at work) and 2000/54/EC (on the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to biological agents at work), biological hazards at work have to be assessed and preventive measures have to be introduced in all member states of the EU. In Germany, national legislation (Biological Agents Ordinance - BioStoffV and Technical Rules on Biological Agents, TRBA) and recommendations of workers' compensation boards define standardized methods for the assessment of airborne mold, bacteria, and endotoxins. This article describes policies and practices in Germany for measurement of airborne bioaerosols and for interpretation of measurements relative to the standards.

Autoantibodies neutralizing human ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif), the metalloprotease that physiologically cleaves von Willebrand factor, are a major cause of severe deficiency of the protease and of acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). We evaluated prevalence of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies in 59 patients with thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs) and in 160 patients with immunologic or thrombocytopenic diseases different from TTP, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies directed against ADAMTS13 were found in 97% of untreated patients with acute acquired TMA who had plasma levels of ADAMTS13 activity below 10%.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are characterized by their unique capacity for primary T cell activation, providing the opportunity for DC-based cancer vaccination protocols. Novel findings reveal that besides their role as potent inducers of tumor-specific T cells, human DCs display additional antitumor effects. Most of these data were obtained with monocyte-derived DCs, whereas studies investigating native blood DCs are limited.

Background: The understanding of the molecular biology of the prostate and the process of prostate carcinogenesis is brought forward by the identification and characterization of new genes specifically expressed in prostate tissue. The encoded proteins may, in addition, provide novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools in prostate carcinoma (PCa). Here, we identify the novel gene Dresden-transmembrane protein of the prostate (D-TMPP) that is overexpressed in human prostate and prostate cancer.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly malignant brain tumor that is resistant to conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The median survival time of patients with GBM has remained less than 2 years despite concerted efforts to improve therapy. As a new approach to treat GBM we generated retroviral particles encoding mutant survivin for transduction of glioma cells.

Human motor behavior is remarkably accurate, even though many everyday skills require flexible adjustments between motor activity and its consequences in extracorporeal space. The present study addressed two questions: first, how do people compensate for unpredictable changes in the environment, and second, how do they adapt to such changes? In Experiment 1, participants repeatedly and continuously drew up and down strokes on a writing pad. After drawing under a base mapping, either (a) a change of target position, or (b) a change of gain, or (c) both occurred.

Objectives: The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the immunogenicity of a combined hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine compared to the effect of the administration of two monovalent hepatitis A and B vaccines by quantitative measurements of the anti-HBs antibody levels at month 2 of the vaccination course. Secondary objectives were to assess immunogenicity of the vaccines investigated at other time points in the vaccination course (months 1, 6 and 7), including the comparison of quantitative measurements results as well as to evaluate seroconversion and seroprotection rates.

Materials And Methods: The study was designed as open, controlled, randomized, monocentric study with two parallel groups.

Prenatal maternal stress has been shown to impair birth outcome and behavioral functioning in nonhuman primate offspring. Little is known about the effects of prenatal stress on behavioral development in humans. We assessed the effect of self-reported prenatal stress on behavioral characteristics of 81 newborns using the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS).

Survivin is critically involved in mitosis and when overexpressed enhances the activity of the Aurora B kinase, a serine-threonine kinase belonging to the family of oncogenic Aurora/IpI1p-related kinases. Both proteins interact with Ras GTPase-activating protein suggesting an impact on the Ras pathway. This study aimed at defining the role of survivin in proliferation and potential transformation of cells.

The study describes the application of a web-based software in the planning of the endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The software has been developed in the framework of a 2-year research project called Aneurysm QUAntification Through an Internet Collaborative System (AQUATICS); it allows to manage remotely Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) models of the abdominal aorta, derived from multirow computed tomography angiography (CTA) data sets, and to obtain measurements of diameters, angles and centerline lengths. To test the reliability of measurements, two radiologists performed a detailed analysis of multiple 3D models generated from a synthetic phantom, mimicking an AAA.

Severe ADAMTS13 deficiency in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is either constitutional and caused by ADAMTS13 mutations, or acquired and most often due to ADAMTS13 inhibitory autoantibodies. In strongly hemolytic serum of a pediatric patient, diagnosed with TTP postmortem, ADAMTS13 activity was less than 3%. Both parents had an ADAMTS13 activity of approximately 50%.

The use of molecular targets in novel strategies of tumor treatment largely depends on the identification of proteins with a tumor- or tissue-restricted expression. We identified the novel protein D-GPCR that is selectively overexpressed in human prostate cancer and prostate and belongs to the subfamily of odorant-like orphan G protein-coupled receptors. Quantification of D-GPCR transcripts in different human tissues by real-time PCR demonstrated 27-fold overexpression in prostate compared to skeletal muscle, the organ with second highest transcript numbers in males.

Pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome are life-threatening complications after pneumonectomy carrying high mortality. Because pulmonary reserve is inadequately low, an effective therapeutic strategy is needed to treat hypoxia. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a highly effective method to reverse hypoxia in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, but has only once been described in a patient with postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema.
