Local recurrence or metachronous distant metastasis of renal cell carcinoma mostly occurs in the first five years after radical or partial nephrectomy. Nevertheless, late local recurrences or metachronous metastases are regularly observed. The most common metastatic sites are lung and bones, although unusual metastatic sites are also possible.

The impact of vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 as well as the incorporation of HPV testing on the detection of CIN 3 and cancer is discussed. HPV testing used as a triage for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, test of cure after treatment, and HPV-based primary screening may improve current cervical screening programs.

Nonetheless, colposcopy remains the best available tool to assess women considered at high risk for having or developing cervical cancer. The provision and role of colposcopy across Europe is variable.

In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that diindolylmethane (DIM) could potentially halt (cervical) carcinogenesis. We report on a randomised controlled trial of the effect of DIM in women with low-grade cervical cytological abnormalities.

Oestrogen interacts with HPV at a cellular level causing cell growth and inhibition of apoptosis. Indole derivatives, formed during digestion of cruciferous vegetables, have been shown to have chemopreventative properties inhibiting HPV transcription and influencing oestrogen metabolism.

Two hundred and thirty-seven liquid based cytology samples were collected from women attending colposcopy clinics, DNA was extracted, and presence of virus determined by PCR-enzyme immunoassay. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to determine viral load for 70 HPV-16 positive single infections.

The aim of this review was to assess the evidence for benefit and harm of undertaking cervical screening in Wales for women aged 20-24 years.
Method: A literature review looking for evidence of the effectiveness and potential harmful effects of cervical screening was undertaken.

Scientific evaluation is a fundamental tool of effective quality assurance of continuing medical education (CME). The analysis of the evaluation system of the CME academy of one the German Regional Medical Associations has revealed both the strengths and weaknesses of this system, thus enabling the installation of a model-like quality control system. Of utmost importance is the construction of an evaluation form that must be designed for good selectivity of the items, and the quality of the event should be well represented by the evaluating questions.

A grading system incorporating grey-scale and power Doppler measurements might increase the accuracy of pre-operative assessment. The present study aimed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of a grading system including grey-scale and power Doppler findings.

Several lifestyle factors affect a woman's risk of gynaecological cancer and-potentially-can be modified to reduce risk. This chapter summarises the evidence for the effect of lifestyle factors on the incidence of gynaecological malignancy. The incidence of obesity is increasing in the developed world such that it now contributes as much as smoking to overall cancer deaths.

Studies have reported the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with conflicting results. This study aims to review the pre-operative accuracy of MRI against the histology in endometrial cancer within a district hospital.

Tamoxifen therapy is associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer. There is controversy regarding the incidence of high-grade endometrial malignancies associated with tamoxifen therapy. This retrospective study assesses pathological features of endometrial malignancy in patients with and without a history of tamoxifen therapy.

In our present study, 148 clinical breast cancer samples (120 cases with follow-up data) were studied for the expression of ERK1, ERK2 and their phosphorylated forms p-ERK1 and p-ERK2 by immunoblotting, and p-ERK1/2 expression in corresponding paraffin sections was analysed by immunohistochemistry. The results were correlated with established clinical and histological prognostic parameters, follow-up data and expression of seven cell-cycle regulatory proteins as well as MMP1, MMP9, PAI-1 and AP-1 transcription factors, which had been analysed before.

In order to further analyze the role of CEACAM1 in the development of breast cancer, we performed Western-blot analysis and immunohistochemistry with highly specific monoclonal antibodies in a cohort of 68 mammary carcinomas which had also been analyzed for expression of cell-cycle regulatory proteins cyclin D1, cyclin E, p16, p21, p27, Rb, and Rb2, as well as for steroid hormone receptor status, Ki67, and HER2/neu immunoreactivity. High CEACAM1 protein expression as found using both methods correlated significantly with expression of the retinoblastoma proteins Rb (P=0.

As this tightly controlled system is disturbed in endometrial carcinomas, we analyzed which cell-cycle regulators are involved in endometrial carcinogenesis.
Methods: We performed Western blot analysis of five cell-cycle stimulating (cyclins D1, E, B1, cdk2, cdk4) and three cell-cycle inhibiting (p16(INK4a), p21(WAF1), Rb) proteins in 41 endometrial carcinoma specimens.
In order to study the role of the p16INK4A(MTS1/CDKN2a) tumor suppressor in breast cancer, we analyzed p16 protein expression in 60 breast cancer samples which were also analyzed for expression of Rb, Ki67, HER2/neu, and estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER, PR). P16 expression was investigated by two methods: western blotting (WB) followed by densitometry, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The Rb status was studied by western blotting, and expression of Ki67, HER2/neu, ER, and PR was analyzed immunohistochemically.

While Rb2 downregulation was observed in several malignant tumours including endometrial cancer, the role of p130 in breast carcinomas is still unknown. We investigated Rb2 protein expression in tumour tissue from 68 mammary and 41 endometrial carcinomas, 4 mammary cell lines, and normal tissue samples.
