Measuring patients' experience with renal services in the UK: development and validation of the Kidney PREM.

Background: Patient experience is a recognized aspect of quality of care for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but current patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) only focus on dialysis care. We developed and validated the Kidney PREM to assess patients' experience with renal services in secondary care for any CKD stage or treatment (transplant, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis).

Methods: We developed the Kidney PREM in two phases, informed by a multidisciplinary expert group to ensure face validity.

Developing Nursing Care Guidelines for Patients With COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced an abundance of new and evolving evidence related to providing care for this complex patient population. Keeping up with the rapid flow of published information can be challenging and time-consuming, even for those skilled at interpreting the literature. To help clinical nurses readily apply standardized, evidence-based recommendations in a rapidly changing healthcare environment, the Good Samaritan Medical Center Education Team created a nursing-specific guideline for care of patients with COVID-19.

The Reflective Fostering Programme-improving the wellbeing of children in care through a group intervention for foster carers: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: The needs of children in care are a government priority, yet the evidence base for effective interventions to support the emotional wellbeing of children in care is lacking. Research suggests that supporting the carer-child relationship, by promoting the carer's reflective parenting, may be an effective approach to improving the wellbeing of these children.

Methods: The study comprises a definitive, superiority, two-armed, parallel, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial, with embedded process evaluation and economic evaluation, and an internal pilot, to evaluate the effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness, of the Reflective Fostering Programme.

The Effect of Compression Socks on Maximal Exercise Performance and Recovery in Insufficiently Active Adults.

In athletic populations, compression socks (CS) may improve exercise performance recovery. However, their potential to improve performance and/or recovery following exercise in non-athletic populations is unknown. Our study evaluated the effects of CS on exercise performance and recovery from a graded maximal treadmill test.

A Retrospective Analysis of Swallowing Function and Physiology in Patients Living with Dementia.

Dysphagia is commonly diagnosed in patients living with dementia, but we lack understanding of changes in swallowing physiology and the resulting relationship to impairments of safety and efficiency. The purpose of this study was to describe the pathophysiology of dysphagia in a retrospective sample of patients living with dementia. Videofluoroscopy data from 106 adults (mean age: 84) diagnosed with dementia were scored by blinded raters.

Contributions of treatment centre and patient characteristics to patient-reported experience of haemodialysis: a national cross-sectional study.

Objectives: To examine the relative importance of patient and centre level factors in determining self-reported experience of care in patients with advanced kidney disease treated by maintenance haemodialysis (HD).

Design: Analysis of data from a cross sectional national survey; the UK Renal Registry (UKRR) national Kidney patient-reported experience measure (PREM) survey (2018). Centre-level data were obtained from the UKRR report (2018).

Ischemic Preconditioning Does Not Improve Time Trial Performance in Recreational Runners.

Some evidence indicates that ischemic preconditioning (IPC) may positively affect endurance exercise performance, but IPC's effect on running performance is unclear. This study's purpose was to examine the effect of IPC on running performance in recreational runners. Participants (n=12) completed IPC, a sham (SH) condition, and a leg elevation without blood restriction (LE) control condition on separate days (order randomized).

Special Considerations for Proprietary Name Review: Focus on Products That May Be Prescribed "As Directed".

Background: Look-alike and sound-alike (LASA) drug name similarity is often cited as a major factor contributing to wrong drug errors. When present on a prescription, differing product characteristics or directions for use may help health care professionals differentiate between 2 LASA drug names. However, evidence suggests that 1% to 5% of prescriptions include only the signa "use as directed" rather than explicit directions for use.

Use of Proprietary Names by Prescribers for Generic Products.

Background: Proprietary names are often used when prescribing drug products in the United States. The purpose of this study is to describe prescribers' use of proprietary names for generic products, branded-generic names, on prescription orders and to identify prescribing practice trends to inform the development and evaluation of new proprietary names.

Methods: To identify Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with branded-generic names approved between January 2003 and December 2012, we utilized the database provided by the FDA Office of Communications, Drugs@FDA .

Psycho-Physiological Effects of Television Viewing During Exercise.

We propose that enjoyment is an important factor in the adoption and long-term maintenance of exercise. Television (TV) viewing is believed to be a highly enjoyed leisure-time activity, combining it with exercise may make for a more enjoyable exercise experience. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of television (TV) viewing on psychological and physiological variables during a moderate-intensity exercise bout.

Portable open-circuit spirometry systems.

Background: The purpose of this review is to describe the evolution of portable open-circuit spirometry systems, and discuss their validity, reliability, and principles of operation.

Methods: Eleven devices were selected for review: the Oxylog, Aerosport KB1-C, Cosmed K2, Cosmed K4RQ, Cosmed K4b2, MetaMax I, MetaMax II, Metamax3B/VmaxST, Medgraphics VO2000, Oxycon Mobile I and Oxycon Mobile II. The validity (compared to the Douglas bag method [DBM]) and reliability of each device for measuring VO2 was summarized.

Racial and ethnic disparities in health care-associated Clostridium difficile infections in the United States: State of the science.

Background: Among health care-associated infections (HAIs), Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. As national progress toward CDI prevention continues, it will be critical to ensure that the benefits from CDI prevention are realized across different patient demographic groups, including any targeted interventions.

Methods: Through a comprehensive review of existing evidence for racial/ethnic and other disparities in CDIs, we identified a few general trends, but the results were heterogeneous and highlight significant gaps in the literature.

Adverse Drug Event Prevention: 2014 Action Plan Conference.

Adverse drug events (ADEs) have been highlighted as a national patient safety and public health challenge by the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention (ADE Action Plan), which was released by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in August 2014. The following October, the ADE Prevention: 2014 Action Plan Conference provided an opportunity for federal agencies, national experts, and stakeholders to coordinate and collaborate in the initiative to reduce preventable ADEs. The single-day conference included morning plenary sessions focused on the surveillance, evidence-based prevention, incentives and oversights, and additional research needs of the drug classes highlighted in the ADE Action Plan: anticoagulants, diabetes agents, and opioids.

Selective targeting of FAK-Pyk2 axis by alpha-naphthoflavone abrogates doxorubicin resistance in breast cancer cells.

Despite an initial positive response, breast cancer cells inevitably acquire resistance to doxorubicin (Dox). Alpha-naphthoflavone (ANF) is a well-known chemopreventive agent; however, its anti-cancer properties have not been established. We examined the therapeutic efficacy of ANF in doxorubicin-resistant MCF-7 (MCF-7/Dox) breast cancer cells and investigated its underlying molecular mechanisms of action.

X-linked myotubular myopathy in Rottweiler dogs is caused by a missense mutation in Exon 11 of the MTM1 gene.

Background: Congenital and inherited myopathies in dogs are faithful models of human muscle diseases and are being recognized with increasing frequency. In fact, canine models of dystrophin deficient muscular dystrophy and X-linked myotubular myopathy are of tremendous value in the translation of new and promising therapies for the treatment of these diseases. We have recently identified a family of Australian Rottweilers in which male puppies were clinically affected with severe muscle weakness and atrophy that resulted in early euthanasia or death.

Characterization of the effects of the vasopressin V2 receptor on sweating, fluid balance, and performance during exercise.

A regulatory effect of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on sweat water conservation has been hypothesized but not definitively evaluated. AVP-mediated insertion of sweat and salivary gland aquaporin-5 (AQP5) water channels through activation of the vasopressin type 2 receptor (V2R) remains an attractive, yet unexplored, mechanism that could result in a more concentrated sweat with resultant decreased water loss. Monitoring capabilities of the Omron HJ-720ITC pedometer.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to examine the monitoring capabilities of the Omron HJ-720ITC pedometer and determine the feasibility of using it in physical activity interventions.

Methods: Using data from an 8-week lifestyle-intervention study, we tested the capabilities of the pedometer for recording physical activity data. Data from a total of 28 subjects were used in our analysis.

Gene therapy prolongs survival and restores function in murine and canine models of myotubular myopathy.

Loss-of-function mutations in the myotubularin gene (MTM1) cause X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM), a fatal, congenital pediatric disease that affects the entire skeletal musculature. Systemic administration of a single dose of a recombinant serotype 8 adeno-associated virus (AAV8) vector expressing murine myotubularin to Mtm1-deficient knockout mice at the onset or at late stages of the disease resulted in robust improvement in motor activity and contractile force, corrected muscle pathology, and prolonged survival throughout a 6-month study. Similarly, single-dose intravascular delivery of a canine AAV8-MTM1 vector in XLMTM dogs markedly improved severe muscle weakness and respiratory impairment, and prolonged life span to more than 1 year in the absence of toxicity or a humoral or cell-mediated immune response.

Selenoprotein N deficiency in mice is associated with abnormal lung development.

Mutations in the human SEPN1 gene, encoding selenoprotein N (SepN), cause SEPN1-related myopathy (SEPN1-RM) characterized by muscle weakness, spinal rigidity, and respiratory insufficiency.
