Individuals with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease have a higher incidence of stone formation than the general population. However, there are no cystic animal models known to develop stones. Cystic mice compound heterozygous for hypomorphic and alleles develop cystic kidneys within a few weeks of birth but live beyond 20 wk of age, allowing for the study of cystic comorbidities including stone formation.

The present study examined the relationship between executive function (EF) and fine motor control in young and older healthy adults. Participants completed 3 measures of executive function; a spatial working memory (SWM) task, the Stockings of Cambridge task (planning), and the Intra-Dimensional Extra-Dimensional Set-Shift task (set-shifting). Fine motor control was assessed using 3 subtests of the Purdue Pegboard (unimanual, bimanual, sequencing).

There is a need to identify strategic investments in Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) health that will yield maximal benefits for overall elephant health and conservation. As an exploratory first step, a survey was administered to veterinarians from Asian elephant range countries at a workshop and via email to help prioritize health-related concerns that will mostly benefit elephants. Responses were received from 45 veterinarians from eight countries that had a range of experience with captive and wild elephants.

Concentrations of serum testosterone, cortisol, thyroxine (free and total T4), triiodothyronine (free and total T3) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured to assess adrenal and thyroid function as they relate to testicular activity and musth in captive elephants. Blood samples were collected approximately weekly from Asian (n=8) and African (n=12) bulls at seven facilities for periods of 4 months to 9.5 years.

This study was undertaken to characterize the population pharmacokinetics (PK), therapeutic dose, and preferred route of administration for pyrazinamide (PZA) in elephants. Twenty-three African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian (Elephas maximus) elephants infected with or in contact with others culture positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis were dosed under treatment conditions. PZA was dosed daily at 20-30 mg/kg via oral (fasting or nonfasting state) or rectal (enema or suppository) administration.

We recently described the clinical presentation and treatment of 18 elephants from six herds infected with TB. Treatment protocols and methods varied between herds to include both oral and rectal dosing using multiple drug doses and formulations. In this paper we present information regarding the pharmacokinetics (PK) of isoniazid (INH) in elephants and provide suggestions regarding initial treatment regimens.

Purpose: To evaluate the use of topical anesthesia for penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in situations where retrobulbar, peri/parabulbar, or general anesthesia are inadvisable or not readily available.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of a consecutive case series consisting of 8 eyes in 8 patients who had PKP with topical anesthesia between September 1995 and December 1997 in cases where retrobulbar, peri/parabulbar, or general anesthesia either could not be performed or presented too great a risk to the patient. Some cases were supplemented with small limbal injections, mild intravenous sedation (fentanyl), and/or intraocular anesthesia.

A search for potential semiochemicals revealed nerolidol (6), albicanol (7), and the new 2,3-dihydrofarnesol derivatives 8-10 in the temporal gland secretions of African elephants. A novel synthesis from (E,E)-farnesol (1) provided compounds 8-10 for GC-MS comparison to the natural products. This study confirms the farnesol family as frequently occurring secondary metabolites in African elephant temporal gland secretions.

Male Asian elephants in musth--an annual period of heightened sexual activity and intensified aggression--broadcast odoriferous, behaviourally influential messages from secretions of the temporal gland. From our observations in the wild, together with instantaneous chemical sampling and captive-elephant playback experiments, we have discovered that young, socially immature males in musth signal their naivety by releasing honey-like odours to avoid conflict with adult males, whereas older musth males broadcast malodorous combinations to deter young males, facilitating the smooth functioning of male society. As elephant--human conflicts can upset this equilibrium, chemically modulating male behaviour may be one way to help the conservation of wild elephants.

GC-MS analysis of extracts from temporal gland secretions of an African elephant has revealed the presence of several farnesol-related sesquiterpenes. Among these are (E)-2, 3-dihydrofarnesol (3), a bumblebee pheromone not seen before in mammals, and a rare component of a Greek tobacco, drimane-8alpha, 11-diol (4), never observed before in an animal.

Many factors have led to the improved success rate for clear corneal grafts after penetrating keratoplasty. Unfortunately, postoperative corneal astigmatism commonly occurs and can produce significant visual impairment. Astigmatic correction may include spectacle correction or contact lenses, but if this fails, then surgical options are considered.

There is a need to develop and test methods of audit of the consultation process in occupational medicine and to draw conclusions from the findings. An external audit was carried out on 313 randomly selected consultation records from the occupational health services of three health boards over a 26-month period. Additionally, nine months after the date of the first externally audited sample, a prospective internal audit was commenced within one board.

An anonymous postal questionnaire was sent to 200 occupational physicians in the UK to determine their activities, the nature of the organizations within which they work and their attitudes and practices with respect to audit. One hundred and sixty-six physicians responded to the questionnaire, of whom 119 (72 per cent) were currently practising occupational medicine. Fifty-seven (48 per cent) of these 119 were engaged in some form of audit but only 21 (18 per cent) were engaged in an audit of structure, process and outcome.

A low frequency telemetry system is described which has been designed to allow high quality ECG measurements to be made on active swimmers. The transmitting antenna is a small loop worn by the swimmer whilst the receiver is fed from a single wire loop around the swimming pool. Both ECG electrodes and the transmitter case are made in a waterproof form which allows the swimmer complete freedom of action to dive and swim normally.
