Background: The consumption of legumes is promoted as part of a healthy diet in many countries but associations of total and types of legume consumption with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are not well established. Analyses across diverse populations are lacking despite the availability of unpublished legume consumption data in prospective cohort studies.
Objective: To examine the prospective associations of total and types of legume intake with the risk of incident T2D.

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of the health system response to the challenge of diabetes across different settings and explore the inequalities in diabetes care that are attributable to socioeconomic factors.
Methods: We used nationally representative health examination surveys from Colombia, England, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mexico, Scotland, Thailand and the United States of America to obtain data on diagnosis, treatment and control of hyperglycaemia, arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia among individuals with diabetes. Using logistic regression, we explored the socioeconomic determinants of diagnosis and effective case management.
Aims/hypothesis: The value of diagnostic categories of glucose intolerance for predicting type 2 diabetes is much debated. We therefore sought to estimate relative and population-attributable risk of different definitions based on fasting (impaired fasting glucose [IFG]) or 2 h plasma glucose concentrations (impaired glucose tolerance [IGT]) and to describe the associated clinical phenotypes.
Methods: We prospectively observed a population-based cohort of 1,963 non-diabetic participants (mean age 47 years), in whom an OGTT was performed at baseline and 7 years later.
