Objectives: This work was designed to evaluate maximum platelet contractile force and thrombus area before and after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in pediatric patients having congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery using a microfluidic device.
Design: A prospective cohort study was designed.
Setting: The work took place at an academic medical center.
Adipose stem cells are considered one of the primary drivers of autologous fat graft biological activity and survival. We have previously demonstrated that hormonally active VD3 improved adipose stem cell viability in ex vivo and in vivo fat grafting models. In this study, we evaluated the inactive form of VD3 (cholecalciferol) on adipose stromal cell (ASC) phenotype during hypoxia and the subsequent effect on human fat graft retention in the xenograft model.

Methods: Between May of 2012 and May of 2017, 72 patients with unilateral primary or secondary lymphedema of the arm or leg underwent suction-assisted lipectomy using the Brorson protocol. This prospective study presents 59 of these patients who had consented to research with a 5-year follow-up.
To address the lack of non-cytotoxic, non-surgical options to treat undesirable focal adiposity of the face, we propose use of the anti-glaucoma medication and prostaglandin F2α analogue latanoprost, which has a well-described side effect of periorbital adipose shrinkage. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of soluble and liposomal latanoprost for focal fat reduction. To compare efficacy, single administrations of either the FDA-approved cytolytic drug deoxycholic acid (DOCA), latanoprost, or liposomal latanoprost were injected into ob/ob mouse inguinal fat pads.

As such, animal groups have evolved coordination mechanisms such as leadership to resolve navigational conflicts of interest. Consistent "leaders" may have an intrinsic advantage over "followers" which compromise on their preferred route to retain cohesion, which highlights the question of the inter-individual variation (phenotype) that can predict leadership.

The correct version removes the superscript 134 next to 'Ba'. This error has now been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.

However, the question of how barites were able to precipitate from a contemporary ocean that contained only trace amounts of sulfate remains controversial. Here we report dissolved and particulate multi-element and barium-isotopic data from Lake Superior that evidence pelagic barite precipitation at micromolar ambient sulfate.

These evaluations can be completed in a traditional office-based setting or in a station-based format. It is unclear if one format is superior to the other in identifying at-risk athletes.

Group living has been proposed to yield benefits that enhance fitness above the level that would be achieved through living as solitary individuals. Dominance hierarchies occur commonly in these social assemblages, and result, by definition, in resources not being evenly distributed between group members. Determinants of rank within a dominance hierarchy can be associated with morphological characteristics, previous experience of the individual, or personality traits such as exploration tendencies.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on pediatric patients who received CVCs via open cannulation of the axillary vein or one of its tributaries between January 2006 and October 2016 at two hospitals.
Results: A total of 24 axillary CVCs were placed in 20 patients [10 male (42%); mean weight 7.
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) in neonates is an uncommon but highly morbid condition. As SBS survival increases, physiologic complications become more apparent. Few reports in the literature elucidate outcomes for adults with a pediatric history of SBS.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for lymphedema can differentiate fat tissue from fluid, but estimating relative volumes remains problematic.
Methods And Results: Patients underwent routine bilateral arm MRI both before and after liposuction for advanced lymphedema.
Using geo-referenced case data, we present spatial and spatio-temporal cluster analyses of the early spread of the 2013-2015 chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in Dominica, an island in the Caribbean. Spatial coordinates of the locations of the first 417 reported cases observed between December 15th, 2013 and March 11th, 2014, were captured using the Global Positioning System (GPS). We observed a preponderance of female cases, which has been reported for CHIKV outbreaks in other regions.

We evaluated the outcomes for our HS population to identify frequency of malrotation and identify characteristics of children who might benefit from expectant management.
Methods: After IRB approval, a retrospective review of all patients treated for HS at a large tertiary care children's hospital between January 2008 and June 2012 was performed.
Neonatal obstructive jaundice is frequently explained by biliary atresia (BA) or the presence of a choledochal cyst (CC). Cystic biliary atresia (CBA) has been a proposed as a subtype of BA with projected improved outcomes. We aimed to characterize these lesions further.

Interstitial cells of Cajal act as gastrointestinal pacemaker cells and express the proto-oncogene c-Kit. Six new cases were identified at our institution which presented with no mechanical, pharmacologic, or otherwise medical-related intervention prior to rupture.

We present two cases of hepatic pulmonary fusion diagnosed with right diaphragmatic hernia and a third case with Pentalogy of Cantrell exhibiting complete agenesis of the diaphragm and finger-like projections of liver adhered to the right lung. It has been proposed that this anomaly is secondary to developmental failure of the mesoderm between days 14-18 after conception and is attributed to diaphragmatic maldevelopment.

Together with primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET), ES comprises the PNET/ES family. Metastasis is present in about 25% of patients at diagnosis and is most commonly found in the lung and bones.

Because they are uncommon, the classification, pathogenesis, and management techniques are still debated. The continual review of splenic cyst cases in the pediatric population is essential for establishing a clear diagnosis and course of treatment.

Methods: Forty New Zealand albino rabbits underwent full thickness cutaneous wounds using 6-mm dermatologic punch biopsies. The rabbits were assigned to four groups of ten, each receiving intravitreal injections of pegaptanib, bevacizumab, ranibizumab, or no injection (untreated controls).
Objective: The goals of this study were to describe the clinical and anatomic features of infants undergoing Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) for biliary atresia (BA) and to examine associations between these parameters and outcomes.
Methods: Infants enrolled in the prospective Childhood Liver Disease Research and Education Network, who underwent KPE were studied. Patients enrolled in a blinded, interventional trial were excluded from survival analysis.
Congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (CIFS) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that primarily presents in the soft tissue of the distal extremities and occasionally in unusual locations such as the lung and retroperitoneum. Herein, we report seven cases of unusual presentations of CIFS. These cases include three in the lungs, one in the retroperitoneum with cord compression, one in the posterior trunk, one in the heart, and one infratemporal involving the sphenoid bone.
