The DDK inbred strain of mouse has a striking particularity: when DDK females are crossed to males of other strains they exhibit a reduced fertility, whereas the reciprocal crosses (non-DDK females x DDK males) are fertile (Wakasugi et al. 1967; Wakasugi 1973). The low fertility results from an early embryonic lethality, the F1 embryos dying near the late morula-early blastocyst stage.

Proteins synthesized by DDK mice embryos were analyzed by 2D electrophoresis and a new egg-specific polypeptide, D14, was identified. The protein is characterized by its high rate of synthesis and electrophoretic properties (MW 36,500, pl greater than 8). The synthesis of D14 is strictly developmentally regulated: starting in the maturing oocyte in the few hours following germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), it remains high over the first cell cycle and decreases abruptly during the two-cell stage.

Endogenous ecotropic MuLV proviral loci are acquired by the progeny of some [SWR/J x (SWR/J x RJ/J)F1] N2 hybrid females obtained by two successive backcrosses of RF/J mice onto the SWR/J background. This results most likely from an infection of early embryos or oocytes by MuLV particles originating from maternal tissues. However, the time and site of infection are not yet known.

Fibronectins (FN) and laminin (LN) distributions were studied in the pig embryo by indirect immunofluorescence using antiporcine FN and antimurine LN antibodies. Extracellular FN are first detected in the early blastocyst before endodermal cell migration. They appear between the cells and on the blastocoelic face of the inner cell mass; thus, they are located at the interface of the trophectoderm and extraembryonic endoderm.

In the amphibian Pleurodeles waltlii, lamininrelated polypeptides (amphibian-LN) are present in the extracellular matrix underlying the blastocoel roof of gastrulating embryos. Immunoprecipitation with affinity-purified anti-laminin antibodies demonstrated that amphibian-LN is synthesized in oocytes (from stage III onward), eggs and throughout early development. At the late blastula stage, when experiments were carried out with animal and vegetal halves, there were no regional differences in the pattern of amphibian-LN synthesis.
