Two cases of small cell "undifferentiated" carcinoma (oat cell carcinoma) of the lung with dual neurosecretory and squamous differentiation are reported. One was treated with various regimens of chemotherapy and radiotherapy; the other was untreated at the time of biopsy. By electron microscopy, the same tumor cells showed membrane-bound, dense-core, neurosecretory-type granules and bundles of tonofibrils denoting squamous differentiation.

Painful exophthalmos, ophthalmoplegia, and visual loss in the right eye developed in a 28-year-old man four months after he underwent a radical orchiectomy and irradiation for a seminoma of the right testicle. Prednisone therapy failed to relieve the symptoms, and an orbital biopsy found a metastatic testicular seminoma. Orbital irradiation with radioactive cobalt reduced the exophthalmos, reversed the ophthalmoplegia, and improved his visual acuity.

We have examined by light and electron microscopy the kidneys of rhesus monkeys infused either with a single bolus of endotoxin (10 mg. per kg.) or continuously at the rate of 10 mg.

An unusual primary intracerebral tumor with combined features of chondrosarcoma and glioblastoma multiforme is presented. Glial elements showing a spectrum of hyperplastic and neoplastic changes were intermingled with sarcomatous areas, similar to that recently described by Lalitha and Rubinstein as "sarcoglioma." Many vessels in the gliomatous regions contained proliferating endothelial cells with marked cytologic abnormalities.

The authors present a case of a highly atypical, possibly malignant, hibernoma. It presented as a deep-seated tumor in the retropharynx of a 57-year-old male. A review of possible similar cases is presented.

Upon admission to the hospital, 7,984 patients were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by radioimmunoassay. Seventy-one patients had sera positive for HBsAg. Twenty-four (34%) were possible asymptomatic carriers in whom liver function was not further evaluated and occult liver disease could not be excluded: 16 (23%) had either a previous history or admitting diagnosis of hepatic dysfunction; eight(11%) had occult liver disease, revealed after HBsAg antigenemia was discovered; and 25 (34%) were unsuspected asymptomatic carriers whose liver function was normal.

Smooth unimodal skewed distributions, sometimes referred to as "epidemic-like" curves, are often used as evidence of time to time changes in incidence. Data on year of onset from groups of treated heroin addicts are generally alleged to reflect incidence, and this distribution is used to evaluate effectiveness and predict future needs. This paper describes the development of simple demographic models which demonstrate the production of epidemic-like curves without changes in incidence, ascertainment or duration of disorder.

Significant associations have been found between the HLA antigens or haplotypes and certain diseases and deficiencies. These associations have opened up new areas of clinical investigation. In man, associations have been shown between the presence of Hodgkin's Disease and a number of cross-reacting HLA types (BW5, BW15, BW18), between systemic Lupus erythematosus and HLA type BW15 in Caucasians and BW35 in blacks, between HLA B37 and ankylosing spondylitis in Caucasians, between HLA B8 and gluten-sensitive enteropathy and between HLA B13 and psoriasis, a disease having a strong hereditary element.

Renal involvement and hypocomplementemia in mixed connective tissue disease are reported to be rare. A patient is described here with mixed connective tissue disease and persistently low serum C'3 levels in whom renal insufficiency and nephrotic syndrome developed secondary to immune-complex glomerulonephritis. Light microscopy of the renal biopsy specimen showed predominantly a membranous lesion.

Kaposi's sarcoma is a systemic, multicentric and slowly progressing vascular tumor which usually affects the skin. Visceral involvement is common, may follow or precede the cutaneous involvement and rarely, may be the only manifestation of the disease. Gastric sarcomatous lesions are characterized by the presence of multiple submucosal or intraluminal nodules affecting a part or the entire stomach and simulating large gastric rugae.

Narcotic addiction is concentrated in certain places and among particular social groups. Heretofore it has not been possible to assess which environmental factors are critical for the initiation of narcotic use, its transition to narcotic addiction; and subsequently, entry into treatment or whether there are environments which select those particularly prone to social deviancy while others migrate out. There are few systematic descriptions of the social and environmental distribution of narcotic addicts.

Optically ground prescription lenses of glass, leaded glass, and plastic were exposed to radiations that simulated routine angiography. Radiations transmitted through the lenses were measured. Plastic provided no protection, regular glass provided moderate protection, and high lead content glass reduced radiation transmission by approximately 70%.

The theory presented here is intended to apply to socially deprived areas where heroin addiction is endemic, narcotics are available, and adolescents are not naive about the consequences of heroin use. In such settings rapid epidemic changes occur in which within a short period of time large numbers are involved. The transition of heroin use is a conversion-type phemonenon which is facilitated by the basic belief system, the network of social circles and the social and psychological inducements for compliance.

Indirect immunofluorescence studies on sections of human normal breast tissue, benign breast lesions, and breast adenocarcinomas were performed with the use of monospecific fluorescein-conjugated antisera to human alpha, gamma, and mu chains, albumin, and C3. In all tissues, benign and malignant, immunohistologic localization of IgA and IgM was noted in patterns previously described for other secretory epithelia. IgG was localized at the tumor cell, but was not associated with epithelial cells from either normal breast tissue or benign breast lesions.
