We utilized these naturally occurring VOCs in an adapted culture method to detect differences in culturing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with and without Staphylococcus epidermidis and Aspergillus fumigatus contaminations. While sarcoidosis is notorious for myriad manifestations including cystic lung changes, we present a case with both Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) and pulmonary sarcoidosis. BHD is a rare, autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by numerous thin-walled, irregular cysts, but lung function is typically normal otherwise. We present a case with confirmed BHD syndrome and concurrent granulomatous lung disease consistent with sarcoidosis.

According to the 2007 National Asthma Education and Prevention Program guidelines, a life-threatening asthma exacerbation is marked by an inability to speak, a reduced peak expiratory flow rate of <25 % of a patient's personal best, and a failed response to frequent bronchodilator administration and intravenous steroids. Almost all critical asthma syndrome cases require emergency care, and most cases require hospitalization, often in an intensive care unit.
