Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) results in decreased quality of life, including increased risk of pulmonary hypertension (PH). In animal models, ARDS can be induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which can disrupt the pulmonary endothelium and epithelium and induce inflammation. Precise control of selective alkene functionalization is a continuing challenge in the chemical community. In this study, we develop a substitution-controlled regiodivergent thioetherification of di- or trisubstituted alkenes using 10 mol % tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(CF)] as a catalyst and N-thiosuccinimide as a sulfenylating reagent. This metal-free borane catalyzed C-S bond forming method is utilized for a Csp-H sulfenylation reaction to synthesize an array of diphenylvinylsulfide derivatives with good to excellent yields (25 examples, up to 91 % yield).

Synthetic and Mechanistic Studies into the Reductive Functionalization of Nitro Compounds Catalyzed by an Iron(salen) Complex.

We report on the use of a simple, bench-stable [Fe(salen)]-μ-oxo precatalyst in the reduction of nitro compounds. The reaction proceeds at room temperature across a range of substrates, including nitro aromatics and aliphatics. By changing the reducing agent from pinacol borane (HBpin) to phenyl silane (HSiPh), we can chemoselectively reduce nitro compounds while retaining carbonyl functionality.

Parallel evolution of integrated craniofacial traits in trophic specialist pupfishes.

Populations may adapt to similar environments via parallel or non-parallel genetic changes, but the frequency of these alternative mechanisms and underlying contributing factors are still poorly understood outside model systems. We used QTL mapping to investigate the genetic basis of highly divergent craniofacial traits between the scale-eater () and molluscivore () pupfish adapting to two different hypersaline lake environments on San Salvador Island, Bahamas.
