How Mental Health Affects Injury Risk and Outcomes in Athletes.

Context: The importance of mental health among athletes is becoming more recognized and valued. Athletes experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, and related mental health disorders at rates similar to those of the general population, but because athletes face unique cultural and environmental pressures, such disorders are exacerbated in the context of an injury. Furthermore, we review the less well-known evidence that mental health disorders in athletes are associated with an increased risk of injury.

Liver failure, whether arising directly from acute liver failure or from decompensated chronic liver disease is an increasing problem worldwide and results in many deaths. In the UK only 10% of individuals requiring a liver transplant receive one. Thus the need for alternative treatments is paramount.

Impact of a State Law on Physician Practice in Sports-Related Concussions.

Objective: To determine physician-reported adherence to and support of the 2010 Massachusetts youth concussion law, as well as barriers to care and clinical practice in the context of legislation.

Study Design: Primary care physicians (n = 272) in a large pediatric network were eligible for a cross-sectional survey in 2014. Survey questions addressed key policy and practice provisions: concussion knowledge, state regulations and training, practice patterns, referrals, patient characteristics, and barriers to care.

Athletes and the arts--the role of sports medicine in the performing arts.

Performing artists are athletes. Like athletes, performing artists practice and/or perform most days with little off season, play through pain, "compete" in challenging environments, and risk career-threatening injury. Athletes and the Arts is a multiorganizational initiative linking the sport athlete and musician/performing artist communities.

Collagenous sprue: a clinicopathologic study of 12 cases.

Collagenous sprue is a rare form of small bowel enteropathy characterized by chronic diarrhea and progressive malabsorption with little data available on its natural history. The pathologic lesion consists of subepithelial collagen deposition associated with variable alterations in villous architecture. The small bowel biopsies of 12 cases were reviewed.

An alternative anesthetic technique for the morbidly obese patient undergoing endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Unlabelled: Abdominal aortic aneurysms have been treated by open operative repair for many years. A frequent rate of morbidity is associated with the natural history of abdominal aortic aneurysms in combination with open surgical repair. Recently a new technique that is less surgically invasive has been developed as an alternative to open repair.
