Regional citrate anticoagulation use in intermittent hemodialysis is limited by the increased risk of metabolic complications due to faster solute exchanges than with continuous renal replacement therapies. Several simplifications have been proposed. The objective of this study was to validate a mathematical model of hemodialysis anticoagulated with citrate that was then used to evaluate different prescription scenarios on anticoagulant effectiveness (free calcium concentration in dialysis filter) and calcium balance.

The provision of optimal, equitable and gender-sensitive health-care to women and girls with FGM/C is challenging. Research indicates that health-professionals in receiving countries lack knowledge, confidence and competence in managing FGM/C. In order to develop policies that are suitable to the wide heterogeneity of women from FGM/C practising groups, it is paramount to identify what appropriate care might consist of and what are the knowledge gaps of health and social-care providers.

Herein, we have studied the direct deoxygenation (DDO) (without prior hydrogenation) of furan, 2-methylfuran and benzofuran on the metal edge of MoS with a vacancy created under pressure of dihydrogen. For the three molecules, we found that the desorption of the water molecule for the regeneration of the vacancy is the most endothermic. Based on the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects, the reactivity order of the oxygenated compounds is furan ≈ 2-methylfuran > benzofuran, which is in agreement with literature.

Amidst concerns over fossil fuel dependency and environmental sustainability, the utilization of biomass-derived aromatic compounds emerges as a viable solution across diverse industries. In this scheme, the conversion of biomass involves pyrolysis, followed by a hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step to reduce the oxygen content of pyrolysis oils and stabilize the end products including aromatics. In this study, we explored the properties of size controlled NiCu bimetallic catalysts supported on ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for the catalytic gas-phase HDO of m-cresol, a lignin model compound.

Background: Blocking the CD47 "don't eat me"-signal on tumor cells with monoclonal antibodies or fusion proteins has shown limited clinical activity in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors thus far. Main side effects are associated with non-tumor targeted binding to CD47 particularly on blood cells.

Methods: We present here the generation and preclinical development of NILK-2401, a CEACAM5×CD47 bispecific antibody (BsAb) composed of a common heavy chain and two different light chains, one kappa and one lambda, determining specificity (so-called κλ body format).

Research on metastatic cancer has been hampered by limited sample availability. Here we present the breast cancer post-mortem tissue donation program UPTIDER and show how it enabled sampling of a median of 31 (range: 5-90) metastases and 5-8 liquids per patient from its first 20 patients. In a dedicated experiment, we show the mild impact of increasing time after death on RNA quality, transcriptional profiles and immunohistochemical staining in tumor tissue samples.

Primary tumors with a mixed invasive breast carcinoma of no-special type (IBC-NST) and invasive lobular cancer (ILC) histology are present in approximately five percent of all patients with breast cancer and are understudied at the metastatic level. Here, we characterized the histology of metastases from two patients with primary mixed IBC-NST/ILC from the postmortem tissue donation program UPTIDER (NCT04531696). The 14 and 43 metastatic lesions collected at autopsy had morphological features and E-cadherin staining patterns consistent with pure ILC.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most frequent type of breast cancer (BC) and its peculiar morphology is mainly driven by inactivation of CDH1, the gene coding for E-cadherin cell adhesion protein. ILC-specific therapeutic and disease-monitoring approaches are gaining momentum in the clinic, increasing the importance of accurate ILC diagnosis. Several essential and desirable morphologic diagnostic criteria are currently defined by the World Health Organization, the routine use of immunohistochemistry (IHC) for E-cadherin is not recommended.

Enantioconvergent reactions are pre-eminent in contemporary asymmetric synthesis as they convert both enantiomers of a racemic starting material into a single enantioenriched product, thus avoiding the maximum 50% yield associated with resolutions. All currently known enantioconvergent processes necessitate the loss or partial loss of the racemic substrate's stereochemical information, thus limiting the potential substrate scope to molecules that contain labile stereogenic units. Here we present an alternative approach to enantioconvergent reactions that can proceed with full retention of the racemic substrate's configuration.

Metastatic breast cancer (mBC) remains incurable and liver metastases (LM) are observed in approximately 50% of all patients with mBC. In some cases, surgical resection of breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM) is associated with prolonged survival. However, there are currently no validated marker to identify these patients.

Cell-cell apical junctions of epithelia consist of multiprotein complexes that organize as belts regulating cell-cell adhesion, permeability, and mechanical tension: the tight junction (), the (), and the . The prevailing dogma is that at the , E-cadherin and catenins are lined with F-actin bundles that support and transmit mechanical tension between cells. Using super-resolution microscopy on human intestinal biopsies and Caco-2 cells, we show that two distinct multiprotein belts are basal of the tight junctions as the intestinal epithelia mature.

Article Synopsis
  • Myelin plasticity is essential for learning and memory in the adult brain, and any loss or alteration can impair brain function.
  • In a mouse model study, researchers found that while spontaneous remyelination can occur after demyelination, the newly formed myelin often does not match the original structure, impacting cognitive function.
  • The study revealed that even after remyelination, there were long-term cognitive deficits, including issues with memory and flexibility, likely due to changes in myelin in key brain areas like the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus.

This review provides an in-depth analysis of recent advances and strategies employed in the Pd-catalysed asymmetric allylic alkylation (Pd-AAA) of nucleophilic prochiral heterocycles. The review is divided into sections each focused on a specific family of heterocycle, where optimisation data and reaction scope have been carefully analysed in order to bring forward specific reactivity and selectivity trends. The review eventually opens on how computer-based technologies could be used to predict an ideally matched catalytic system for any given substrate.

Oocyte maturation is a key process during which the female germ cell undergoes resumption of meiosis and completes its preparation for embryonic development including cytoplasmic and epigenetic maturation. The cumulus cells directly surrounding the oocyte are involved in this process by transferring essential metabolites, such as pyruvate, to the oocyte. This process is controlled by cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent mechanisms recruited downstream of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) signaling in cumulus cells.
